Very cool underground tour. And panning for gold was so fun for the kids. Staff was extremely friendly and informative. They also took us directly back to the pier for our debarking time, since it was a tight timeline.

Our family members that went on this tour ranged in age from 7 to 62, and we all greatly enjoyed this tour! All of the staff members were so friendly and welcoming. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, having actually been a gold miner, and showed us how the equipment was used when the mine was operating. The gift shop was full of great options for locally-made souvenirs and goods. And of course, getting to pan for gold was a huge hit! I would definitely recommend this tour.

We had a surprisingly fun time on this adventure. Our shuttle drivers (both to and from the dock) were informative and super friendly, answering questions about the mine and the area. Loved that the mine tour was accessible - I am a cane and sometimes walker user, and we noted the tour before us had a wheelchar user as well. Gerry was fun, though did not seem to enjoy answering questions, even though he kept asking if we had them. While the inside of the mine was cool (literally and figuratively - bring a sweatshirt or jacket!), I really loved hearing from Dale and also the Alaska Native gentleman (apologies, I forgot his name) a lot more about the history of the mine and the impact on the local community. The gold panning was super fun too! Also, we saw a black bear, pretty close, which was the highlight of my partner's trip. All in all, a wonderful time, even though there were a few hiccups being their opening weekend. We highly recommend this for folks of all ages and abilities, and might even do it again in the future!

It started out with Richard driving us to the mine, entertaining us all the way with his humor and interesting local facts. By the time we got up the road, we felt like old friends. Brad’s knowledge of mining made his presentations clear, and MaryAnne’s energy, enthusiasm, and explanations finished the mining process. It was a perfect day, finishing the tour with panning for gold. The hot chocolate left a great warm up, while shopping in the general store stocked with so many interesting things.

THIS IS A MUST DO !!!! Best thing we did at any port . The transportation was perfect and the tour of the old mine was amazing . You won’t regret doing this and knowing this history helps you understand so much about how these towns came to be .

This was a great & informative tour. The ride up to the mine is crazy scary & steep. Our driver was so sweet & said it was nothing, but it may me say a couple prayers. Everyone seemed to love their jobs. First you take that awful ride up, put on a hard hat & go into the very chilly mine. It was about 40 degrees on day we went, which was a pretty warm day outside. You your the mine with your guide. He gives details of life for the miners. After exiting the mine, you watch take a seat to learn from a very enthusiastic man about the history of the building. This man is retired & this is his enjoyment & you can tell. Then you learn about the stamping process & then what we all came for, panning. It was very fun and all three of us left with a vile of gold. You feel very appreciated for your business at this establishment & I would highly recommend while in Juneau.

Great experience to be able to learn about and explore a real mine and see how the original equipment was used (and still works today). It was also fun to pan for gold. Overall, a really enjoyable day!

The guide’s description of how hard and dangerous the work was in the mine, especially when it was cold and wet.

We had this excursion set up for 3:30pm. We followed the instruction to where to meet. We waited, but no one showed up. I called the local tour contact number, and they said that the trip had been rescheduled for 11:30am. No one notified us of this change! After a number of phone calls and a bit of a hassle, they refunded our money, but we missed the experience. This was a one time trip, so it was a disappointment! If you choose this tour, call the day of to verify the time.

I booked this experience while we were going to be in Juneau for a cruise. The bus picked our group up and the driver was very pleasant and informative. It was a short drive to the mine and he shared local history with us on the way. The tour of the mine was very informative and our group wasn’t large so everyone could see and hear the information the guide was giving us. After the tour there was a Q & A session and then we went to pan for gold. There were several employees there to help if we needed it and everyone found a few flakes that were put in a small glass vial to take with them. My husband and I really enjoyed the experience and would recommend it.

This was a unique experience for the area. The drive up to the private mine property in the tour vans set the tone for understanding how remote the location was for those working in the mine. The guides were excellent, informative, answering all questions with details beyond what we expected. Our bus driver on the way down shared local dog stories, the perfect wrap up for the tour! We enjoyed witnessing the actual operation of several pieces of equipment used during the time of active mining, some in place as early as 1904. Our two teen boys loved the actual panning for gold flakes, both leaving with a small vial containing 10-15 little pieces of gold. We thought that garnets were supposed to be included in the panning area, but no further mention of them was offered and we didn't ask with all the other information coming to the forefront. The only negative feedback we might give is the regret that the group didn't go any further down the mineshaft, but this may be a safety concern.

Very very pleased even much better than I hoped for. Great guides who had worked there, excellent demonstrations, never felt rushed. Learned a lot. A must do.

The mine itself with the knowledgeable instructor Gary was the most in depth experience. Great personality that wanted to share information.

Very knowledgeable guide. It was fun being able to walk into the mine and see exactly how it was left when they quit mining it. Panning for gold was also interesting. It is nice that you get to keep your few flakes that you find in a little vile that they give you.

Loved panning for gold and a few deer showed up to watch us pan! They were unfazed by our group. I loved learning the history of the mine and what it used to look like.
