My husband and I had a thoroughly absorbing three hour walking tour of Old and New downtown Skopje on June 29, 2028. Our tour guide Kate was one of the best we have had in our month-long exploration of the Balkans. She filled our heads with incredibly enlightening information and perspectives, while her great sense of humor and warm manner made her a joy to be with for the morning. We learned about the many impressive statues and their controversies, got a beautiful tour of Mother Teresa’s museum, gained a sobering lesson on the 1963 earthquake during a tour of the old railway station (now city museum) and delighted our senses in the enormous bustling green market. Crossing the Stone Bridge into old Skopje, we saw ans and bath houses, Gold Street, and the beautiful large mosque. Especially moving was our visit to Sveti Spas with its unusual hidden architecture and gorgeous, rare iconostasis. In two places Kate enriched the tour by handing us off to representatives of the places we were seeing, thus deepening our exposure even more. Our tour concluded at the Kale Fortress. Kate was very responsive to all our questions and needs, even helping my husband buy stamps and mail some postcards at the post office in the city mall. Throughout the tour she invited our observations and shared her own perspectives on what we were seeing. Her honesty and personability allowed us to feel wonderfully connected to her and the city. I was quite disappointed when this tour was over, but have been able to reflect on what we learned ever since.
We had a private tour in English with Kate. She was absolutely a delight and explained everything to us. I would highly recommend taking the private walking tour. It was so much fun and I feel we saw everything downtown Skopje had to offer.
