Stop At: The Great Mosque of Kairouan, Rue Sidi Abdelkader, Kairouan 3100 Tunisia
The Great Mosque of Kairouan, the first in the Maghreb, was founded in 670 and rebuilt in 836.
It served as a model for other mosques in the Muslim West, up to Andalusia.
The mosque is named after the Arab conqueror Oqba, founder of the city.
The minaret is reminiscent of ancient lighthouses, such as the famous lighthouse of Alexandria. 31.50m high, it overlooks the vast courtyard surrounded by arcades.
A forest of columns occupies the entire space of the prayer hall, framing the majestic central aisle.
Many of these columns were taken from ancient sites like Sbeïtla.
The portico surrounding the courtyard, the prayer hall, the harmonious symmetry of the facade with its arched arches and its dome make this mosque a masterpiece of architecture.

We were supposed to be picked up at 6.20 which turned into 6.40, then coach took us to pick up other people from different hotels , we waited 25 minutes for 1 man who couldn’t get up on time, in total over and hour collecting people, then another hour to get to the basins , which are important to Tunisia but not really much to see, very rushed as had to make up time ,then went to the first mosque , very pretty building again rushed ( make sure you cover your knees and shoulders) they will give you something if not. After that back of the coach again , rush to next mosque , you have to walk through a busy market and get free time there say 15 min , then walk to mosque . Again very pretty , but one mosque would be enough if you’re not really into religion. Back on the coach for another hour and half , stop for lunch, Buffett style which was nice, then to El Jem what an amazing place, really beautiful and so worth a trip, you get about an hour and half there, I would of liked longer , on the coach at 2.30 to take you back, the guide was good but , has to say everything in 3 different languages, so you don’t get as much information as you could, if you just wanted to go to el jem , I would get a taxi next time, perfectly safe, and cuts out all the nonsense, All in all way to much time travelling on the coach, but some very pretty buildingsGhassen was a very knowledgeable, pleasant and friendly guide. Ghassen was a very knowledgeable, pleasant and friendly guide. He shared a lot of information on the visited sites and Tunisian history in general, presenting it in a very comprehensive and digestable manner. It was a great day that left us with lasting impressions of Tunisian history, culture and daily life. Although we enjoyed the tour very much, we felt that the price-performance ratio was not reasonable, especially given local standards. The admission fees of all 3 visited sites total to the amount of 36 TND per person (appr. 11 ЕUR), out of 140 EUR trip. In addition despite being mentioned in the tour description, we admittedly missed this detail and were unpleasantly surprised that the lunch was actually not included in the tour (which was the case for alternative tour operators). Again, given the price of the tour the fact left a negative impression. Ghassen took us to a very cute local restaurant and food was great, portions generous and the owner very sweet, in the end we were charged 50 TND for 2 people (we never saw a menu or anything of the sort and the price was rather a negotiation between the tour guide and the owner - still totally fine for European standards, but it was rather the treatment that bothered us). Another small detail was that on a very hot day we were driving without the A/C on until explicitly asked to turn it on - usually even taxi drivers ask if the temperature in the vehicle is alright. Overall, if the small details get fine tuned, so tourists don‘t get the feeling of being ripped off, this tour can be absolutely enjoyable and worth its price.Loved the visit to Kairouan and El Jem with Ghassen. The sights were amazing and Ghassen was an amazingly knowledgeable guide. So much history here I never knew about. Great lunch across the street from the amphitheater in El Jem. Highly recommend.
