Pass By: Kigali, Kigali, Kigali Province
Ideally in the centre of Rwanda, Kigali extends across several hills and valleys, with good road links to the rest of the country. The verdant capital city is pleasantly low key yet dynamic and progressive, with just over one million inhabitants. First-time visitors to the bustling and colorful centre often remark how clean the streets are, a matter of pride across every community throughout the country.
Kigali is relatively new city. It was founded as an administrative outpost in 1907, and became the capital of the country at independence in 1962, shifting focus away from Huye.
Kigali is developing rapidly, with new shopping malls, office buildings and a world-class convention centre built in the style of the King's Palace of olden days, which lights up the night sky atop of one of the many hills.
Stop At: Kimironko Market, 194 St Kg, Kigali Rwanda
Kimironko market is the busiest market in town. The entrance to the market is small but when you walk through the gates, it's a shopping paradise. The market is in a large warehouse complex, with four equidistant entrances.
The entrance on the right hand side of the market is where the vibrant Kitenges fabric is located, while the entrance to the left is where the butchers and fisherman hawk meat and fish.
With your back towards the Kimironko bus station, the official entrance to the market, this is where households goods and plastic buckets of every shape are sold awaits. The last entrance leads directly to used clothes and the market seamstresses.
Locals from all over the city come here to stock up on fruits, vegetables, fabrics clothing, shoes, and general households necessities.
The expert tailors are constantly available and happy to manufacture Kitenges apparel or accessories in timely and cost effective manner.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Nyamirambo, Kigali, Rwanda
Nyamirambo is not your usual Kigali neighborhood. While most areas in Kigali wind down by evening, Nyamirambo is like the Big Apple of Kigali - an Islamic hotpots that never sleeps.
A creative hub, the source of many talented Rwandan artists and musicians, Nyamirambo's unique mix of cultures is expressed in street art, food, and fashion, and an exciting atmosphere. During the day, you can enjoy a lively stroll, especially throughout the colorful Car Free Zone, and at night watch as Nyamirambo comes alive with street food, parties, and dancing.
This Kigali city tour will allow you to experience life in the country today and Rwanda's remarkable recovery is a true statement to humankind's resilience.
