I had a great tour with Ahad. He was very helpful, including with a couple logistical things. I really enjoyed talking with him to get a better sense of the community and its history.

There is no doubt that visiting Dharavi is an informative tour and very thought provoking. Our guide, who had grown up in Dharavi, was about to graduate from Mumbai University and had aspirations to study for an MBA in England. He knew his way round and at all times we felt safe. Initially, the narrow streets looked pretty much like other market areas we had been to but soon they became even narrower and more squalid with festering rubbish, the cables and wires above more mesh-like in their complexity and the 'buildings' more and more resourceful in their construction. We were shown some of the 'industries': men sitting on the floor of windowless shacks sorting plastic; boys in no more than a pair of shorts dying fabric in huge vats of boiling dye; others in a dark room repairing machinery, to name a few. We came across a couple of shoeless children pushing their toys through the mire in the street. This was the real slum. The workers are all migrants, who leave their families to come and work here for no more than £5 a day, often less. They live in cramped accommodation above their workplace, with no light or sanitation. Contrary to other reviews, I did not think they looked happy - just getting on with life, and work, as best they could. Towards the end of the tour we were shown the 'residential' area with more solid accommodation, a school and a tower block where the government is trying to rehome some of the residents. My guide Yahya was born and lives in Dharavi, so he was the perfect person to show me around. It was a real eye opener and not what I (wrongly) expected. The people of Dharavi will surprise you by their résilience. It is a visit not to be missed
