I joined Kevin on the 'Roam with the Roman's tour', alongside Hadrian's wall. I had a fantastic time! It was surreal, but so cool to meet Kevin, in his authentic outfit and feel like I was being given a guide from a spirit of the past. I love social history and Keven narrated so many interesting quirky facts that have stayed with me and which I certainly wouldn't have known if I had only visited sites/museums. I was also so impressed with 'Wild Dogs' for doing the tour with just me (it was my birthday weekend and none of my family could join me but I thought it exceptionally kind that Kevin turned out for a tour with just one customer). I absolutely loved this tour and hope to return to Northumbria later in the year with my family and enjoy another authentically guided tour. All correspondence and planning was dealt with in the utmost professionalism and care. I would highly recommend this company.Spent a lovely day with Kev from Wild Dog Outdoors. Spent a lovely day with Kev from Wild Dog Outdoors. He took my son (aged 10) and I for a walk/tour along a portion of Hadrian's Wall and then a guided tour through the Vindolanda site/museum. It was a great day and tour! Very informative and interesting. He kept my 10-year-old son interested and entertained for a whole day. The demonstration of real Roman garb and weaponry was brilliant. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour to individuals and families. This tour was one of the highlights of our week long visit to Newcastle. My wife and I visited England for our honeymoon in November, 2016. My wife and I visited England for our honeymoon in November, 2016. Not exactly a typical time to visit, and Northumberland may not be a part of the country that one naturally thinks of visiting as the days are getting shorter and the weather is growing colder, but we wanted to see more of the country than just the south. We also wanted to see some historical sites while we were there, so we booked two tours with Wild Dog Outdoors: the Roaming with the Romans tour, and the Devilswater to Durham tour, with Kevin as our guide on both days. Both tours were fantastic! Kevin is an incredibly knowledgeable, friendly guide, with what is clearly a deep passion for history. The sites were also terrific to see. On our Roam with the Romans tour, we visited Hadrian's Wall (one of the mile forts near Haydon Bridge), and the Vindolanda museum, both of which are remarkable sites to see. The Vindolanda museum is worth visiting alone, even if weather prohibits a walk to the wall itself. It's an amazing collection of antiquity that really helps to illustrate daily life on the frontier of Roman Britain. On our second day, we visited Hexham Abbey (including the crypts below), Blanchland, and both Durham Cathedral and Durham College. While Durham Cathedral and College are certainly the centerpieces of this tour, the other two sites are well worth visiting, and Kevin again provided excellent insight into the history of both locations. For both days, Kevin picked us up at our hotel, and drove us around by car. This gave us an opportunity to see a bit more of the Northumberland countryside, which I highly recommend seeing if you have a chance. On our second day, we also stopped at the Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland for a cup of coffee, and had lunch in the Durham Cathedral restaurant, both of which were quite nice, especially on a cool November day. Overall, we had a wonderful time, and heartily recommend Wild Dog Outdoors. One last note as a postscript -- don't be scared of visiting in the later months of fall. One of the main benefits of the timing of our trip was that there was basically nobody around anywhere, so we had pretty much all of the sites we visited to ourselves, at least insofar as other tourists were concerned. I'd suggest visiting in September or October, though, if you're looking to do Wild Dog's Castles of the Coastline tour (which I'll absolutely do the next time we're in the area), since many of the sites close down for the winter months. This was arranged for me as part of a tour. This was arranged for me as part of a tour. Kevin came to pick me up and drove me to our first stop, where he dressed as a Roman auxiliary, and we walked a section of the wall. He then took me to Vindolanda and Housesteads, which were fascinating with his commentary. He is a mine of information, presented in an informal and easily digested style. The whole thing lasted six hours, and was one of the most interesting days I have experienced. My wife, son and I spent a highly informative two hours with Kevin, our guide at the Cawfields milecastle on Hadrian's Wall. My wife, son and I spent a highly informative two hours with Kevin, our guide at the Cawfields milecastle on Hadrian's Wall. The first 20-30mins involved an exploration of the armour, swords, shields etc worn by auxiliary Roman soldiers. We walked about a mile of the wall with lots of stops during which Kevin provided additional information on a whole host of historical, economic and social issues, not only confined to the Roman occupation of Britannia but of diet, anthropology and his obvious passion for pre-history too. A fascinating morning for all three of us. Note: Kevin also popped up in the Langley Castle video, albeit without the armour, beard etc :-)Sara and Kevin of Wild Dog Outdoors were our guides along Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda, Walking with the Jacobites and they coordinated the Birds of Prey demonstration. Sara and Kevin of Wild Dog Outdoors were our guides along Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda, Walking with the Jacobites and they coordinated the Birds of Prey demonstration. We were completely astounded at the knowledge that Sara and Kevin imparted on our group. They planned a 2 day experience that non of us will ever forget. They are passionate, knowledgeable and engaging. They far exceeded our expectations! I would highly recommend their services.
