Booked Iguana Mama for an excursion on our tour because of the savings- for the same price lunch and drinks were included and our small group of 8 had our own incredible tour guide, Carlos. That’s a lot extra for the same price! We did have to walk outside of the Amber Cove cruise port, which took around 15 minutes from the ship and was easy with great instructions from Iguana Mama. We were greeted at a van (no huge cruise ship bus) by Carlos who had cold bottles of water for us. Once all eight of us were there, we drove to the waterfalls which took around 30 minutes while Carlos talked to us about DR and the people. The waterfalls are in a National park that includes bathrooms, a small shop, lockers, and an office. The National Park sends you with one of their guides and a photographer that takes photos of your group and sells a flash drive of the photos for 50 USD. No one in our group chose to have the photographer come. The park gets you properly fitting life jackets and helmets- they were in good condition and came in many sizes to fit everyone. You need closed toed shoes, which they have available for rent, and you have to leave almost everything except waterproof phones or cameras. The hike up to the waterfalls can be pretty steep but is manageable for most people. We took four or five breaks. The trail passes by plants and trees with signs identifying the species. Some of the steps and ladders are very uneven and don’t include hand rails. We brought bottles of water which we could discard at the end. At the top, we walked to the first waterfall. The full 27 is probably not available for most of the summer because of low water- we couldn’t do the full 27, only 12. The path becomes very treacherous, as you walk through a creek at varying levels, meaning lots of wet and slippery rocks. I was very glad to have Carlos with us, as he paid attention to the eight of us and helped us get through the trail safely. The larger cruise ship groups only had the National Park guide for between 25-30 people, so they received less help. The first jump was 8 meters high, or 24 feet! If someone loses the nerve to jump, they can walk up stairs and get down without jumping. However, as Carlos said, you paid to jump, not to walk! The jumps are safe and the guides all point you to the exact right locations to be safe. We went through 2 big jumps, 3 slides, and one jump or slide where you could choose. The guides always helped you sit or stand in the right place before going down. The adrenaline rush and thrill of jumping cannot be overstated! Also, the entire hike is in a beautiful forest. At the end, we went back to the visitor center and sat in a covered pavilion with ceiling fans. We ate lunch from a buffet that was served to us with generous portions. Food included salad, rolls, macaroni salad, eggplant, rice and beans, spaghetti, and pork and chicken grilled right in front of us. Carlos provided bottled water, sodas, and rum and Coke’s. After we ate, we headed back to the cruise terminal. The entire trip started at 9am and we were back by 230pm. The experience was incredible. The jumps and slides are spectacular and easy for anyone to do. The park is stunning. It was made better by having Carlos carefully guide us while providing a great sense of humor! To have a great time, bring closed toes shoes with good traction that you are comfortable wearing. I wouldn’t rent just because the trail can be slippery- you want to trust your shoes. I would also recommend bringing some sort of waterproof camera because the photos cannot be believed! Check out some videos on YouTube if you’d like a preview. Thanks again to Iguana Mama and especially Carlos. This was our first cruise excursion with an independent company and it was an amazing experience and well worth our money! After having another company cancel iguana mama answered the phone at 11 pm and helped me book for the following day. You will have a personal photographer follow you and take photos throughout the entire trip. Worth the money since memories are priceless! and the flash drive also had short videos, not only photos. Only downside was the buffet that was advertised in the end. there was no fruit given! only rice and chicken and beans kinda buffet. Tour guides are great and helpful! This was a great tour! We were picked up on time and our guides were knowledgeable and attentive. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a day of adventure from Puerto Plata, Sosua or Cabarete.
