Once in the Medina, you’ll be immediately immersed in the historical heritage and the cultural prosperity of old Tangier. You will literally feel as if you have time-traveled back to medieval times.
The walking tour of the Medina will let you have direct contact with the friendly locals; and by strolling down the Medina’s labyrinthine alleyways, the tour will take you through the most important landmarks of the city such as the Grand Socco, the Petit Socco, and the Kasbah. You will also visit monuments that are considered architectural masterpieces decorated with mosaics, ornamental stucco, and wood carvings such as the Great Mosque, Dar El Mekhzen located in the Kasbah, and the American Legation.

During the tour of the Medina, you’ll make a stop at this historical square which is commonly known as Grand Socco and that divides the Medina from the Ville Nouvelle area of Tangier. It is one of the places that hosted Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany when he visited Tangiers on 3 March 1905. The stopover that worsened tension between the Germans and the French and that, among other events, ultimately led to the World War I. It’s also the location where King Mohamed V delivered his speech and the symbol of his arrival to the city on April 9, 1947 when Tangiers was under international domination.

The Kasbah Museum or the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures has been housed since 1922 by the Kasbah Palace known as "Dar-Al-Makhzen" or the Sultan's Palace. The building occupies the eastern part of the Kasbah of Tangier. The site has undergone before the successive constructions of the residence of the Portuguese governors "Dorons Praefecti" between 1471 and 1661, then a larger "Upper Castle" which was the residence of the English governors from 1662 to 1684.

The Great Mosque of Tangier is a nineteenth-century construction that stands in what was once the center of the Medina of Tangier. The site of the mosque was formerly the home of several significant religious buildings from various civilizations that previously occupied Tangier, dating back originally to a fifth-century Roman church. After the Muslim conquest of Tangier in the eighth century, the church was converted to a mosque by the Marinid Dynasty and remained so until the late fifteenth century. The mosque was replaced by a church during the centuries in which Tangier was under Portuguese and English rule. After Moulay Ismail recaptured the city for the Alawi dynasty in 1684, the church was once again transformed into a mosque. Sultan Sulayman completely rebuilt the mosque in 1815 due to its poor physical condition, creating the building that stands in Tangier today.

Close to the aptly named “Bab Merican, ” this elegant five-story mansion is the only American national monument located outside of the United States. As you may know, Morocco was the first country to recognize the fledgling United States, in 1777, and this was the first piece of American real estate abroad, as the original building was given to the United States to serve as a diplomatic presence in Morocco by Sultan Mulay Suliman in 1821 and served as such in some capacity until 1961, and that is the longest period (140 years) any building abroad has been occupied as a United States diplomatic post.

Located on a dead-end street off Rue des Synagogues in the Beni Idir quarter of the Medina of Tangier, this synagogue was constructed in 1876 by Moïse Jacob Nahon, a prominent educator, and scholar from an influential Jewish family in Tangier. The synagogue ceased activity in the second half of the 20th century and subsequently fell into disrepair until its restoration in 1994. It now functions as a museum.

Let me start off by saying we do not take organized tours when we travel. We prefer to explore on our own and at our own pace. However, research into our first trip to Morocco via friends, blogs and TripAdvisor (of course), a common thread prevailed: We Should Hire A Private Guide. So we did- we selected Latif Tours based on the reviews on Trip Advisor and I am happy to say it was a great decision. We arrived by ferry at Tangier Ville dock and were met by Ali of Latif Tours. Our ferry was late but Ali was right on time. The large and comfortable SUV accommodated 5 adults easily. We were whisked off to the Ancient Medina for lunch at the Restaurant Kasbah. Our tour of the Medina and the Kasbah followed through the narrow winding streets. Ali introduced us to the culture in the Medina. Of course, no tour of the Medina is complete without a visit to the rug shop, spice shop, and textile shop - which we found charming and interesting. We bought a beautiful Berber rug and were very pleased with our purchase. We never felt pressured to buy anything. Following the Medina and Kasbah, Ali turned us over to Abdul who took us to the beach, to ride camels and to visit Hercules Cave. All the typical sites. He delivered us to our hotel and asked the porter to escort us to another restaurant in the Medina for the evening. He was concerned that we would get lost in the narrow winding streets, particularly at night. We certainly appreciated the extra attention. Latif Tours - 5 stars!FlowerTrips

He is extremely knowledgeable, and was able to answer all of our questions regarding history and culture. Some tour guides try to pressure you into purchasing other services, or try to upsell with tours to other locations, but there was none of that with Latif. He understood that we didn’t want an organized tour of the entire country, but rather wanted to follow our own itinerary, and we really appreciated that. We would certainly recommend Latif Tours to anyone looking for a personable, knowledgeable guide to show them around Tangierjay r

Latif private tour is the absolute best. Five of us ferried over from Spain to check out Tangier. Fortunately we had made reservations with Latif Tours for our private tour. We were met at the boat dock and quickly boarded an SUV for our tour. And what a tour it was! We hit all the high spots in Tangier, as well as some off the lesser spots. For example, we passed Malcolm Forbes' house which he owned and often occupied prior to his death. Some of us did camel rides, while others took numerous pics of the various places we visited. The Medina was cleaner and less confusing than the one in Fez, and there were some bargains if you're a shopper. One place was selling LaCoste polo shirts - 2 for $50. Knock offs, but good material. There were also very reasonable prices on carpets, scarves, and leather goods. Latif explained the significance of the sights we visited, filled us in on the history, and was the super tour guide! We ended up spending close to six hours on the tour - even though it was advertised as a four hour tour. All in all a great day. I highly recommend Latif tours if you should go to Tangier. The communication to set-up the tour was clear, timely and and the company was easy to work with. They are flexible and attentive to our needs. This was especially helpful since we had just arrived in Morocco. Highly recommended!
