I was fortunate enough to randomly select a Monkey Island tour with Juan @Manikan Adventures. As I was a solo traveler, Juan worked with me to find a date that he could accommodate me with another group of folks (typically a minimum of 2 people are needed to run tour). He was very communicative on pickup times, and planned agenda, and did so kindly in English, as my Spanish is not the best. Come the day of the tour, Juan was right on time for my hotel pickup as promised. During the drive, he gave us some background on the history of Panama and pointed out more landmarks than I probably will ever remember. Although some unplanned hiccups (road closures due to Carnival, closed bathroom facilities, the people factor, etc) slowed things down a bit at the start, he kept an incredibly positive attitude and carried on with giving us the best experience possible. Once we arrived at the docks, we quickly hopped in the boat, and were off to see the wildlife at monkey island. Juan was incredibly knowledgeable on local flora and fauna, and between him and the boat driver, they spotted several types monkeys, crocodiles, birds, and iguanas with ease, pointing them out with excitement to the group. At no point did I feel rushed or bored, and couldn’t wait for what came next (including his incredible skill of calling monkeys)! After we boated around for a bit, we headed off for a hike in the jungle @ Sendero de Plantación en el Parque Nacional Soberanía . As I live in the American Southwest (desert) it was quite the experience to see so many different types of plants and so much greenery (even during dry season).. I may have asked a few too many questions on the plants and animals of the region, but Juan didn’t seem to mind, and was happy to answer every single one comprehensively, and with a smile. If you are taking this tour, my advice would be to wear closed toe shoes with some traction, as it can get a bit tricky navigating out there. I wouldn’t say strenuous, but it is the jungle, so paved walkways do not exist. After hiking, we were off to lunch at a local Panamanian spot. I was pleased with the nice selection of menu items; it was so refreshing to be able to eat fresh fish, with Panamanian flair in the accompanying side dishes. Juan said his regular spot was closed due to Carnival, but I had zero complaints about his second choice. Once we were finished with lunch, we headed over to the bio museum to walk around the outside and take some photos of the canal, the cityscape, and some of the most incredible flowers I’ve ever seen. I am not sure this was typically part of the regular tour, but I was glad we stopped. It definitely added to the experience. With the completion of the tour, Juan returned us back to our hotels. It was a long day, but I am very grateful for all the knowledge that he was able share throughout. Value for money is definitely there, and I look forward to taking another tour with his company, on my next visit to Panama. It is clear he has a true passion for all things Panama, and especially when it comes to the ecotourism aspect. Don’t sleep on reserving this tour; it’s incredible! The boat trip and walk on Pipeline Road were amazing. Our guide was very knowledgeable- and pointed out lots of animals. A really enjoyable trip.

Unfortunately we've arrived in Panama City during the protests against the government 2022. Being a tourist during those times and little international press coverage made it very hard to be aware of the current situation and still spend decent holidays. Juan, the owner of the agency, made us feel very welcome from the first moment on. The monkey Island and National park tour was awesome and an experience we'll certainly never forget. We saw crocodiles, sloths, bats, monkeys and many more wildlife during our boat and walking tour. It was a blast to experience those animals in their natural habitat. Juan holds a degree in biology and is very knowledgable about the animals and the ecosystem of a jungle. The boat ride on the Panama Canal along the giant ships was impressive. Furthermore his English language skills are very good. Juan gave us lots of background information on Panama as a country, it's development and it's culture. What was even more impeccable for us was how he took care of us after the tour. He always checked on us if we are safe during those uncertain times and organized a transfer to the airport for us to make sure that we make it out the country safely. Juan is not just an outstanding guide but someone who really cares about his customers and their well being. I'd recommend to everybody to experience his tours and the hospitality of this excellent agency. The tour was an awesome experience! Our tour guide Nicolas was extremely knowledgeable about the different animals in the forest. We got to see and feed the monkeys up close and personal. Having a guide like Nicolas who knows what to look for made the tour exciting and memorable.
