Stop At: Carambola Botanical Gardens & Trails, Across From Anthony's Key Resort, Sandy Bay, Roatan IB3107 Honduras
One of our favorite spots in the island, Carambola Gardens, is a paradise in itself. Decades of hard work and dedication have gone into these lush botanical gardens filled with exotic plants and beautiful animals like hummingbirds and Agouti rabbits. Carambola Botanical Gardens provide protection for iguanas at the iguana wall and natural breeding grounds for parrots. Have you ever seen the Cacao Tree before? The tree where chocolate comes from? There's hundreds of them at Carambola Botanical Gardens! You can also see the Honduran mahogany tree and the cannonball tree (You gotta check it out!)!
At Carambola, bridges connect walkways that lead the visitor through areas of flowering plants, ferns, fruit and nut trees such as cashews, soursop and carambola (star fruit). Hardwoods include Spanish cedar, Ceak, Cordia, and Carreto. Among the natives you will find Hog Plum, Gumbo-limbo (the naked Indian/tourist tree), Trumpet tree, Teta, and Masica to name a few. The palm selection consists of Royal, Fishtail, Areca, Phoenix, Pindo, Fan Date, Chamaedorea, Veitchia and the Majestic Norfolk pine that command the gardens. Magnificent Royal Poincianas await you at the main entrance.

My tour guide, a native of Honduras, provided a first-class, excellent, extensive tour, which first involved visiting the rum factory, which provided an extensive collection of homemade, flavored rums, rum cakes, cigars, and coffee beans. We then traveled to the Carambola gardens where he provided me with interesting knowledge about all of the garden botanicals, which was followed by a short hike up to the top of Carambola Peak, which provided a breathtaking view of the shoreline and nearby island below. Then, we concluded the tour with a visit to The Roatan Chocolate Factory, and I was treated to firsthand information about all things chocolate (from the shelling of the cacao bean, to the separation of the cocoa powder and cocoa butter). I emphasize the words "firsthand" because my tour guide once worked as the manager and now provides the factory with wholesale cashews. I recommend this tour to anyone who plans on visiting Roatan, as he provides an unforgettably authentic Roatan experience!Such a lovely hike. Such a lovely hike. The trail is beautiful with lots of very interesting things to see. Our tour guide Dani was extremely informative and we learned so much about the Roatan culture and history. The hike itself is not too hard but not too easy - Dani also accommodated our desired level of difficulty and made sure we got to see and walk as much as we wanted to, which was much appreciated. We also got many recommendations for food and other activities for our stay. Definitely book your tour with the Roatan tour association!!Andres was amazing! So personable and patient. He even hiked the mountain with us! Communication was smooth with good follow up, timely service, and all around five star experience. Highly recommended
