Pass By: Belize City, Belize City, Belize District
This tour will take you to visit a Mayan ruin where you can learn about a great civilization that inhabited Belize over 3, 000 years ago. Journey through the Mayan underworld, tubing through underground caves over 175, 000 years old as your headlights reveal many untouched crystal formations below the surface of the earth.
Altun Ha was first settled somewhere around 250 BC, with construction of the buildings beginning in 100 AD and continuing throughout the Classic Period that ended in the 10th century. Some 10, 000 Mayans lived in and around Altun Ha, which was a significant trading center as evidenced by the large amounts of jade and obsidian excavated here in the early sixties and seventies.
Stop At: Altun Ha, Rock Stone Pond Belize
Altun Ha Tour: spanning a 25 square mile area roughly an hour from Belize City, Altun Ha is made up of two central plazas surrounded by towering temples that enclose the palm strewn land. The larger of the two plazas, Plaza A, is the site of a mysterious tomb discovered beneath one of the temples called Temple of the Green Tomb. Jade, jewelry, flints and skins are among the three hundred remnants that were unearthed here.
Cave tubing provides thrills to suit nearly any age and fitness level. After a brief 30-minute hike to the entrance of the cave, inner tubes are used to float along the Caves Branch River.
Hear the echo of your own voice bounce off the distant walls. Listen to the water dripping from the ceiling, creating spectacular formations in the stunning chambers. And while you might be expecting dark and claustrophobic passageways, you are likely to find enormous chambers and cathedral-sized rooms.
You will be driven back to your hotel or cruise port at the end of the tour.

This was a great adventure had by all 9 of our party! Our guide “A” was extremely knowledgeable and just a superb guy. He took time out to patiently wait at the port (his boss was not as patient), b/c if you do not catch the 1st 2 tenders to go on shore you take a little longer to meet up. This day, December 26th (Christmas), it seemed that everyone had booked private excursions instead of through the cruise line... so we had to be patient to get off the boat and onto the tender to meet up with our guide. By the way... they usually wait at Terminal 2 in the Belize City Port. And it takes appr 40 mins to the caves and then 40 mins back to Port... even from Altun Ha. The cave tubing was AWESOME... we would all do it again! Alton Ha was a little short lived/hastened due to the time crunch to make it back onto the ship at 4pm sharp! We barely made it! But let me say that our guide although nervous about the traffic we might encounter, and a true Belizean motorist, was verbally pleasant the WHOLE time trying to get us back for the last tender. I would definitely recommend doing the cave tubing and Altun Ha as separate excursions... not together b/c of the time constraints. Don’t get me wrong, glad we did both, or we would have felt we missed out, BUT I will definitely do a longer cave tubing adventure if I’m ever in Belize again. All around fantastic! Cave tubing, lunch in car on the way to Altun Ha and then back to tender for last one at 4pm!Enjoyed the tour. The tour operator was really good. Had great time. Kids also enjoyed the tubing adventure and the ruins.

He also knew to get to the caves before the cruise ship tours arrived. He knew local artists and vouched for them and had a great recommendation for lunch. We had such a good time!
