Fantastic 4x4 open top Land Rober tour of the West of the Island with Pedro. Just the two of us guests as there were no other people wanting West that day. So it was like a private tour! Fantastic information & sights & a real insight into rural Madeira. We also did a tour of the East so the island in the same week, this time with David, a qualified mountain guide. We had so much fun, a great day & another fantastic trip - this time with just 4 of us guests in the jeep. A very professional outfit all round. What a wonderful day. We enjoyed this trip from start to finish. The Laurisilva ancient forest was haunting when the mist rolled in. Our lunch at Porto Moniz was delicious. Our guide/driver, Pedro was knowledgeable and interesting. I would recommend this trip.

Impressed not only by the island of Madeira, but also with the experience offered by the tour. Ricardo is a linguistic master (Portuguese, French, English, a little German - he knows it all!) - and he made sure everyone felt engaged in the history he shared during the tour. The terrain and shore of the west are breathtaking and well worth the trip from our base in Funchal. It's definitely an off road experience! Nothing unpleasant or unbearable, but be ready to bump around a bit. But to have a great time doing it!The prior information about this trip was scant and previous reviews gave an insight to the direction and facilities en route. The prior information about this trip was scant and previous reviews gave an insight to the direction and facilities en route. Generally this was a good taster of the different parts of the island and the routes were a combination of on road and off road tracks which gave you lots to see in parts of the Island otherwise out of reach. The points on the map mentioned in the description are accurate but the routes are not described and I now think this a good thing for the excitement of the off road parts of the trip. Suffice it to say that there are many opportunities to see, hear and experience Madeiran life and the island. Celso our driver was competent cautious and safe on all parts of the journey as well as knowledgable of local history and traditions. He spoke different languages and ( with the exception of Finnish) communicated with group well. Lunch was at Porto Moniz. There are natural rock pools there at €3 per person and I'm told the 18 deg water was comfortable. We took a packed lunch but the company has a meal deal with a hotel which others said was excellent food albeit a limited menu for this. A word of warning, with the soft top open, the wind in the back is really chilling , even when the sun is shining , so at least bring a windresistant top if not more. On the trip we joined another jeep from the same company and I had the pleasure to be introduced to Lucy the other driver who is clearly capable and has a great personality too and was keen to engage with our group as well as her own. My reason for 4 and not 5 star is the administration and covid care. The email clearly states the precautions to be taken including a maximum of 6 persons per vehicle. There were 8 in ours - full capacity of the vehicle. There is an irony in the company asking us to wear masks - following the law - in an open top vehicle which is effectively overcrowded from the covid perspective whilst being in the open air all the time. As a final general point we were one of a number of 4x4 companies on the same trails and the tracks were clearly being worn away by this activity. I would like to think that companies put something back into the maintenance of these tracks and not that their main aim is simply the business of Tourism. - a personal and perhaps optimistic view. The tour of the West of Madeira was extremely enjoyable. The tour of the West of Madeira was extremely enjoyable. I joined a "safari" of three jeeps, with just five of us in my vehicle. Louis was an excellent driver and guide, full of interesting facts about the island, particularly the plant life. We had some amazing views from the mountains and cliffs and, unlike some tours I have been on, there was no rush at the stops nor pressure to have lunch at a designated restaurant. The climax was a visit to Cabo Girao, with the thrill of walking and standing on the glass viewing platform. Apart from the amazing day out, I had quick and helpful responses from Christiano, the owner of the company and he accommodated my change of date without fuss.Great trip, I think the best way to explore Madeira is by jeep. The off-road is quite awesome and the views... they are fabulous. Ricardo is a great guide, he really knows the place, and he loves what he does, which make the trip even better.
