Badlands Sunset/Stargazing - Private
Overview
*THIS evening tour is designed for those that want to enjoy a beautiful desert sunset and stargaze . . . and return to your hotel at a sensible time. We depart at 5:15pm and return at 10:15pm.
Open-Top-Tours has explored the North & South Units of the Badlands for over a decade, we know where to find the best viewing for sunset and where to find wildlife at dusk. Our experienced local guides love what they do and love to share their knowledge with our guests.
FYI - Over 80% of Americans never get to see the stars! That's what makes the Badlands so great. The Park does not have any city or other ambient lights. Prior to sunset, we drive the Badlands 'Loop' stopping at overlooks and at wildlife locations for photos.
At the Pinnacles we stop, pull out chairs and enjoy the amazing sunset. Then we head to the park ranger-led Night Sky Program, where you'll learn about the universe and maybe even get to see the sky through a telescope. Fees, bottled water, snacks are included.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product
Stop At: Roberts Prairie Dog Town, Sage Creek Rim Road, Badlands National Park, SD
This is a great place to see and hear the prairie dogs in the Badlands park. Don't feed them. Don't approach them. The reason they bark is to warn others that you're in the area.
Duration: 10 minutes
Stop At: Hay Butte Overlook, Badlands National Park, Interior, SD
This views the lower Sage Creek and the canyon that it has carved through time. It's one of the most spectacular views of the Badlands and many visitors miss this.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Pinnacles Overlook, Vista Point, Badlands National Park, SD
This view displays the expanse of the Sage Creek Wilderness area. On clear days, the Black Hills are visible on the horizon. Bison might be visible in the distance, in the valley below or the upper prairie to the northwest. This overlook is also a popular spot for Bighorn sheep to gather. This is also a lambing area for Bighorn sheep in late April to early May, so it’s not unusual to see lambs traversing the rocky slopes of the Badlands.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Cedar Pass Campground Amphitheater, 20681 SD-240, Interior, SD 57750, USA
We will attend the Night Sky Program at the Cedar Pass Amphitheater. Park astronomer's guide everyone through the night sky, pointing out celestial objects! Telescopes are available for visitors to look through and get a closer look at planets or the moon. The special darkness of Badlands National Park helps to see planets, the Milky Way, star clusters, nebulae, the International Space Station, shooting stars, and – occasionally – the aurora borealis.
Duration: 1 hour

Our tour guide seemed unconcerned about his passengers. He couldn’t have cared less about “photo stops”. He seemed only concerned about the things he was interested in. The tour was boring! But the Badlands were amazing. We would love to come back and tour them on our own.

It was like being on a different planet! It was simply breathtaking. It hard to explain the way the sun hits the badlands and creates the most awesome colors and shadows. Loved this place! Magical!
