Maria was an excellent guide, vibrant and funny. The tour starts in front of a supermarket and she takes you on to a local bus to the market where she walks you through the various sections with a little bit of information. Then you take a van to her family’s house where you have a home cooked meal. The market was large but not dissimilar to markets in lots of other third world countries so would have happily wondered around without a guide but of course having one does add a little to the experience. The real highlight was the home cooked meal and most importantly the variety of fresh fruit served. We had an incredible half day tour with Liz which provided us with a unique window into the lives of local people. We had an incredible half day tour with Liz which provided us with a unique window into the lives of local people. Liz is a fabulous guide who is both informative and fun. We walked all over the market learning about the native foods and sampling incredible items. We even had a really fun mini dance lesson and met a poster artist who created a poster just for us. It will be a unique souvenir, and we already have a great photo of us with the poster. This will be a tour we will never forget, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a glimpse into how locals really live while learning about both Cartagena and Colombia.Touring the Bazurto Market with Maria and her team and having lunch at her relatives' house in the neighbourhood of Bruselas was a truly amazing experience. Touring the Bazurto Market with Maria and her team and having lunch at her relatives' house in the neighbourhood of Bruselas was a truly amazing experience. We'd been to the market on our own a couple of days before and realised just how much we'd missed when we went again with Maria. This time around we got to meet local characters, hear about their lives and what they sell, learn about the history of the city and market, taste local food and drinks, take a crash course in champeta on a street corner, and visit a family in a working-class neighbourhood. In short, get a feeling of the real pulse. Maria is warm, fun, knowledgeable and genuine. She clearly loves what she does and does it very well. We've traveled quite a bit all over the world and have tried many guided tours. This one stands out as one of the very best anywhere. Thank you Maria! This was a great experience, we went to the local market, experienced food , dancing, artists, and the ‘real’ local people of this wonderful town. This was a great experience, we went to the local market, experienced food , dancing, artists, and the ‘real’ local people of this wonderful town. It’s good to get out of the touristic ‘bubble ‘ of the old city , and feel the day to day life of Cartagena citizens, and their very long traditions at the local market. After that we have fantastic food at a family house close by. I have to say, that the tour was done by Maria, who is a fantastic , energetic and very knowledgeable guide. And quite funny! She made the difference, for sure!My sister and I booked the Market Tour with Discover Cartagena and we had such a great experience, I definitely recommend this for anyone looking to be a part of the Colombian Culture. My sister and I booked the Market Tour with Discover Cartagena and we had such a great experience, I definitely recommend this for anyone looking to be a part of the Colombian Culture. It is a little off-the-beaten path for most tourists, a hidden gem. We explored explored the local market amongst Cartageneros working and shopping for their families. We tried all sorts of interesting fruits and foods. The fried fish was so good, do not hesitate to try it! We saw a famous local artist at work and hear stories of some of the market's oldest vendors. Our guide was so friendly and how they interacted with everyone really made it special. Highly recommend. Make time for this tour in your trip, you won't regret it!
