Stop At: Kolkata Heritage Tram Tours, Esplanade Metro Rail Station Office No. 8, Mezzanine Floor, Kolkata (Calcutta) 700069 India
Greet your private guide outside Esplanade metro station at 5pm and catch the train up to a district little visited by foreigners and known for its cuisine.
When you disembark, you'll dive straight in with an exotic lasse found at a local street vendor before hopping into a tiny joint that's been whipping up some of the best masala curries in Kolkata for more than a century. As you eat, your guide will tell you stories of old Calcutta.
Jump aboard a local bus for a short journey up to one of Kolkata's most celebrated seafood restaurants where you'll try their signature jumbo prawn covered in chingri coconut cream sauce and a mouth-watering curried fish mousse steamed in a banana leaf. After leaving you'll clamber aboard one of the old rickshaws, the only place where these wooden carts still exist in India and take a short tour of the area en route to the next foodie stop. Gorge on a prawn kabiraji at a legendary kitchen started by a Scot in the 19th century.
Kolkata might seem busy, but your guide will take you on a walk down through a peaceful district pointing out temples and local life along the way. As you meander the backstreets of old Kolkata, you'll try tasty titbits from the city's most famous onion bhajis to zingy gram salads made from herbs and pulses.
Sip on local ginger infused chai tea before jumping on board one of the old trams that have been plying the streets of Kolkata for over a century for a short journey to College Street. Here, piles of school book sellers are passed by university students on their way back from lectures. Drop into a local cafe to sample a famed coconut sherbet drink and then dive into Bengali treats at a nearby sweet shop.
The evening finishes in the faded grandeur of old colonial coffee shop where students are busy debating, ceiling fans whirl overhead and waiters serve coffees in traditional garb.
This isn't just a foodie tour, it's a tour into the heart of Kolkata.

We had a fantastic time on Avik’s food tour of Kolkata. From the outset when meeting him at the chaotic Esplanade station, to the bus ride to end the tour, we felt comfortable and safe in his company. Although we tried several brilliant Kolkata favourites, the food took a back seat to the amazing cultural side of Kolkata that Avik was able to show us - travelling around via several different means, walking through the oldest suburb in Kolkata, and standing at a busy junction to people watch - this trip had it all, and no question was too much for Avik. Our highlight was the perfect prawn cutlet we had at Allen’s, but all the food was lovely. A great night out in Kolkata with the brilliant Avik.We had an amazing insight into the life of the real people of Kolkata as well as eating terrific food. We had an amazing insight into the life of the real people of Kolkata as well as eating terrific food. With Avik we rode on local buses and rickshaws to parts of the city a tourist would never find. Walking along narrow alleyways of old colonial houses, faded now but still with beautiful wrought iron balconies and carved shutters revealing an elegant past, Avik explained the past and present of the city. We visited the tiny workshop of a clockmaker as well as a street of bookshops. He chose the eating stops with care, some owned by the same family over several generations. So much food, so much fun! This is much more than a food tour. It is an opportunity to learn to love Kolkata. Imagine delving into a place that seems so foreign and unknowable with a patient, curious guide who understands the West and can translate what you’re seeing, hearing and tasting. Would I have ever taken the metro or a local bus on my own? Sat in a place eating mutton curry that has been there for more than 100 years? Not for the front of heart but push past your comfort zone and explore. The most amazing food tour we have ever been on, our guide not only introduced the best dishes in town but also showed us the most interesting cultural pockets of Kolkata, which we would never found by ourselves. This is a tailored tour from someone who loves his town, and food just blew us away....

Not only was the food great, we experienced Uptown Kolkata. Avik knew the area like the back of his hand and provided great insight into life ‘Uptown.’ I learnt so much and the tour was very thought provoking. I would definitely recommend this tour.
