This past week I treated my (23F) little brother (18M) to a trip to London. It was our first time in London so we wanted to make the most of our time. We only purchased the Big Bus for our last 2 days in London. The idea was that we'd have a calm and scenic method of transport to give our feet some rest at the end of the trip. We specifically purchased the more premium Big Bus tour that included a river cruise and evening tour. First of all, the bus stop locations were great. We would hop on at Baker Street and there were more than enough stops to get to everything we wanted to do. The buses were pretty clean and typically arrived on time. Our only issue with bus arrivals was while waiting at stop 15 (St Pauls Cathedral) on our second day. We waited for over an hour and through the app we saw a bus slowly make it's way towards us but ultimately divert from it's regular path and skip our stop leading us to take an Uber to our next destination. Later that day we found out this was due to a large amount construction in the area. Maybe I didn't check hard enough but I wish the app had notified us of this while we were waiting there. Second, the river cruise. Unfortunately, not enough information was provided on when the cruises depart which led us to miss the cruise two days in a row and have to pay for an Uber boat to get us to our next destination. This should really be something that is better outlined in the FAQ and ideally made easily searchable through the app. Lastly, the tour experience. For all of the day time tours we took, the only audio guide was via a pre-recorded track. It was corny, somewhat informative, played too much music, and overall we didn't end up using it after the second time we took the bus. The saving grace was the night time tour. When we arrived at the stop we were informed that we would have an actual tour guide (Phil) guiding us throughout the tour. From the moment we sat down on the bus I knew it was going to be a good tour. Phil made the effort to go to each and every person to ask them where they were from and talk about their city for a minute. It turns out, he is quite the world traveler and it was entertaining to hear him connecting with people. After that he pointed out that we could take an amazing picture of the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) with the sun setting behind us which most of the people proceeded to do, that was super nice of him to do. Once the bus started moving he didn't stop talking until the very end. Winston (out bus driver) had to make some detours due to traffic and Phil had no problem modifying his tour to fit the new route. He clearly loved what he was doing and spent time outside of work researching the route and discovering new and interesting things he could tell us. It was truly a treat to have him with us and made the tour exponentially better than if we had to listen to a pre-recorded track full of music. Before the tour with Phil and Winston, I was feeling disappointed with the Big Bus experience and would have rated it a 1 or 2 but Phil really did lift my spirits on that final night. Anyone can walk around London, take the tube, and learn basic information about the city and all of it's big attractions. But what Phil provided was so much more than that. He was funny, quirky, informative, and gave you information that you would have never known otherwise. If you take the Big Bus tour, I highly recommend finding out what bus Phil will be on. You won't regret it! And to the Big Bus company. Hire more people like Phil!!! I can only imagine what COVID did to your business but now that things are normalizing you have to bring back the tour guides. People like Phil make the experience so much more dynamic and would make me want to take your tour again the next time I'm in London. We went to an evening tour on the Big Bus with mister Winston & Philip. They were such a great guide. He was really giving energy to the tour and making everybody participate. I wish that everyone could have such a great experience!
