Stop At: Calabazo Breaking Borders, Cra. 1 Este #10-58, Santa Fé, Bogotá, Cundinamarca, Colombia
Meet in front of the small chapel in Chorro Quevedo and start to learn about the impressive history of a group of locals from the Egipto neighborhood in Bogotá. Deciding to leave their criminal past behind they have started the initiative Breaking Borders, showing tourists around their streets filled with artwork that tells the neighborhood’s history. In this way, tourism has formed a real alternative for their personal and professional development and opened the doors for a brighter future.
You’ll meet your English speaking guide at Chorro Quevedo in La Candelaria, the founding place of Bogotá. There you will learn about the project before heading to Nuestra Señora de Egipto, the church located at the entrance of Barrio Egipto. This is also the scene for the festivities on the 6th of January.
All along the way, you will be able to see the history of the people illustrated in impressive graffiti art. Your guide will let you in on the meanings and stories behind these murals.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Iglesia de Egipto, Carrera 4 Este No. 10 a-02, Bogota Colombia
You will then reach the hills where the modest houses of the local guides and their families are bedded into the steep hills. You will note that the community is still underdeveloped and struggles with access to basic utilities. In spite of these conditions, this place is full of life thanks to the people’s warmth, joy, and desire of their children to fight for their dreams.
In this area, you will also see one of the biggest changes in the neighborhood. Thanks to the project; a football field has been constructed for the children of the district. Hear why this field in and essential part of the ongoing transformation.

This was an amazing experience to learn about the transformation of one of Bogota's oldest neighborhoods that at one time was considered to be the most dangerous, told by a local guide who at one time had been part of the gangs. His story will bring tears to your eyes. Added to the story are the amazing and colorful murals and the welcoming smiles of the people who live in the neighborhood. Two of us booked the Breaking Borders tour via Impulse Travel in January. It's a fascinating walk round Barrio Egipto, a neighbourhood of Bogotá which is still controlled by gangs and would not be recommended to visit unless you were with one of the gang members. We were lucky enough to be with the head of the initiative, Jaime, and the only other person with us was Raul, a representative of Impulse Travel, the company with whom the project was started, so we essentially had a private tour, which meant we could ask questions as we wished and we got a really personal service. You could contact Jaime privately, but there was real value in booking via Impulse, because they picked us up at our hotel and we got an extra insight from Raul into how the project started and other aspects of the city. Plus, the drive from the hotel to the meeting point with Jaime was spectacular. I have always wanted to learn what life is like in gang-controlled areas of cities like Bogotá and this was an invaluable opportunity. I thoroughly recommend it!

This tour was amazing. It was great to see the transformation happening in the neighbourhood. I did pay quite a bit extra because I was doing it solo but I learned a lot so it was ok. The guide and driver were great and I felt a bit bad that I could not tip them more because I gave a bigger tip to the former gang members instead. They were excited to tell their stories and I was interested in knowing how they feel now. One of them told me that he felt RELAXED now. Drinking, drugs and violence on Friday nights has now turned into Family movie night where they play movies for the whole neighbourhood. Good to meet the young kids who are part of this organization too. The one I met wants to go to school and become an English tour guide. Great tour...price was not properly reflected. They should fix the price to a per person..I paid over 200 Canadian dollars for a tour that said 55 and up. You will want to tip so bring extra cash. Good tour, you quickly realize how lucky you are once you see where they live. Do it and support the group.
lo recomiendo, es un tour que sirva para poder hacercarte a la realidad del barrio egipto y a la transformación que esta viviendo el barrio!!
