The tour was fantastic and effortless, but maybe that’s not helpful to you. What might be: I was having trouble booking a train ticket out of Surabaya for the next day, so when I arrived at the airport to wait for the tour I didn’t have onward travel. My guide, Yuli, took me all around the city from convenience stores to offices to the train station trying to get me out the next day. He did this without being asked, and without expecting anything for it. When solo, these are the things that really make you feel good. Thanks a lot Yuli!I booked a sunrise tour to Mount Bromo, where I was picked up and dropped back off at Surabaya airport. I booked a sunrise tour to Mount Bromo, where I was picked up and dropped back off at Surabaya airport. We drove to the national park, slept in the car for a couple of hours, then switched to a jeep to start the journey. As we were early, we stopped off for a breakfast of noodles, tempe and coffee, which my tour guide Nico very kindly paid for (I was definitely not expecting him to!). After watching the sunrise, Nico left me to climb Bromo myself which was very straightforward. As a piece of advice, it is cold watching the sunrise but then as you walk across the sand to climb Bromo, it gets very hot very quickly - I would recommend wearing layers so that you can strip off as it warms up. Also note that you will definitely end up with black dust/sand in every part of your body, the worst was up my nose! Nico was lovely, stopping on the drive whenever I wanted to and making sure I was comfortable so that I could sleep in the car. He even stopped at one point when we were in a remote area to show me the stars which was amazing. Overall, I had an amazing time and would definitely recommend. Our guide Vir with the driver were super punctual to pick us up, and available to get part of the group at Surabaya’s train station and part at the airport. Our guide Vir with the driver were super punctual to pick us up, and available to get part of the group at Surabaya’s train station and part at the airport. We then started our road towards Cemoro Lawang stopping at a typical Indonesian buffet restaurant - very local experience ;). We arrived around 10pm at our hotel for the night, nothing pretentious but perfect to sleep some hours ( N. B. there’s no heating so get ready with long pijiamas and sweaters). At 3am we left with the jeep heading to Mt. Bromo view point. Our guide made us stay warm around the fire with some hot tea and coffee waiting for the sunrise. He continued checking the right moment looking at the light/clouds/time and right before sunrise he made us walk up a hidden pathway where there was much less people and had a magical view over Bromo. From there we headed to the sand sea where the guide was available to stop and take us photos and then proceded up to the crater. Overall Vir was a fantastic guide, friendly and available, speaking good english! Absolutely recomended! Differently from others Vir followed us along all the tour, giving us explanations and finding us the best sposts. We had a great time visiting Mt. Bromo. We had a great time visiting Mt. Bromo. Thanks to our expert guide who found us a spot despite the crazy traffic. Seems like middle of the year is not optimal to visit this location because of the crowd size. However everything was smoothly arranged from the 4x4 jeeps, the horse back rides and waterfall tour. Our guide made sure we were safe, they were flexible in our schedule and I would say that they gave top notch service. The hidden gem in the tour is the waterfall. Bromo is a dusty place so jumping in the cool refreshing water feels nice. Bring extra clothes!Trip was tiring, mainly because I flew in to Sby Friday night and was picked up the same night to head to Bromo. The guide Dian was great, everything was explained and also taken care of. If you can't speak a word of bahasa, you definitely need to get a guide like Dian. The waterfall was awesome...

If you can't speak a word of bahasa, you definitely need to get a guide like Dian. The waterfall was awesome and somewhat more enjoyable than watching the sunrise over bromo?!
