What to expect
The Flying Dutchman Funicular, also known as the Cape Point Funicular, is a funicular railway located at Cape Point. It’s the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, and takes its name from the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship.
The line runs from a lower station at the Cape Point car park, up an incline through dense fynbos to the upper lighthouse. The funicular leaves from the lower station every three minutes, comfortably accommodates 40 passengers per car, and can transport 450 persons to the upper lighthouse per hour, making it the ideal way to whisk closer to the lighthouse even during peak times

Pensioners get discount, frequent, quick and comfortable. Still a lot of steps and walking if you want to go to the end of the road so it is a good idea to use the funicular for this very steep section.

Lovely experience likely to do it again

Service at the ticket office could be better but the price is ok at R75 or c £5 return. It runs c every 5 minutes and does save you a sharp uphill walk - simple as that. The views at the top do give you a different and probably better perspective of some of the truly spectacular views than the ones you get at 'base camp' - the car park and shops. In particular you get wonderful views of the absolutely mesmerising Dias beach and over to Cape of Good Hope. It can be very windy up here. In summary it is well worth doing simply to get the views at the top. As an attraction in itself it is not surprisingly functional but it does the job.Still quite a few steps to climb to get to the lighthouse so why not take the funicular. Return ticket only marginally more than single. Shame the mist rolled in when we got there but difficult to plan for when taking a day trip from cape town
