We travelled with about 11 people in all on an airconditioned mini bus. Coral our guide spent most of the 1 hour trip from the port to Chacchoben telling us about the history and culture of the Mayan people. She did it in a thorough and easy to understand presentation that included large photos and maps of this area of the Yucatan. She answered questions confidently displaying a great depth of knowledge, it was really enjoyable and the time passed quickly. We were on an 8am tour and so beat many of the bigger tours and the midday heat.. Coral ushered us around the site avoiding other groups so we were able to get great photos without other tourists in them. I asked if we would see spider monkeys so Coral had her eyes out for a monkey family she's seen before and before long we found them. She explained how they're timid and especially when the howler monkeys are around to chase them away. We were given cold bottled water which was a nice touch. We made our way back to our initial departure point around 1PM which gave us time for lunch and a look around the port side markets and attractions before making our way back to our ship. It was a great experience especially booking through Trip Advisor directly with the company rather than paying about 50% more for a bigger group through the ship's excursion desk.We had a great tour guide, Jesus, who was very knowledgeable and had great stories. He even showed us some ancient pottery from different time periods. The ruins were awesome!! Such a cool place to visit.
