Mae Chan is a town and a district (amphoe) in the northern part of Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand. Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Mae Sai. Chiang Saen, Doi Luang. Mueang Chiang Rai and Mae Fa Luang of Chiang Rai Province.

he Akha, also known to the Thai as the Gaw or the E-gaw (names that the Akha do not like), are located primarily with Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai province. The Akha are closely related with the Hani of Yunnan province, China, the Akha-Hani complex numbers about two to three million people, but with just over 70, 000 members in Thai territory. The Akha speak a language in the Lolo/Yi branch of the Tibeto-Burman language group, but have no traditional written language. There are a variety of schemes for writing Akha developed by missionaries or linguists which employ Roman, Thai or Burmese characters, but literacy in Akha is still virtually nil. The Akha are traditionally subsistence farmers, growing a variety of crops including rice and corn.

Hall of Opium Golden Triangle Park is a kind of museum in Chiang Rai. Its exhibitions are all about opium. Therefore, you will learn about everything you need to know.
The museum is about 400, 000 square metres large. The exhibition start from the history of opium, the natural science of opium, to the trouble of opium. You can learn about these things through many types of displayed items.

It was a very well organized trip, excellent tour guide and we enjoyed our day. We visited the tribes village and the tea farms, tour chiang Sean to border of Myanmar. The lunch was very delicious and as requested it was a Halal Muslim restaurant. We did a visit to golden triangle and the opium house. The tour guide (Sandy) was very passionate, helpful and caring. Thanks to her.really great experience our guide was excellent. highly recommended to anyone interested in northern Thai history.
