What to expect
Join one of our certified guides in the Kananaskis Village, then depart for the trailhead - a short 5minute drive in our personal vehicles. Kovach was a tiny town where the workers and their families from the coal mine once lived. This hike takes you along the trail where horses used to cart the coal, to a stunning viewpoint where the mine scar is visible. Retrace your steps through the forest as you imagine walking home from a long day at the mine to your home in Kovach.

The guides are incredibly friendly and engaging. Views are spectacular. This hike provides historical context of the coal mine and the Kananaskis area in general. What was even more impressive is the guides' deep ecological knowledge - we learned more about the flora and fauna of this area than we ever could have reading a guide book. The beer at the end was cherry on top. 10/10 would recommend this hike.We went on the guided Ghost Town Hike with Jeff. He explained the hike, told us what to expect and made sure we were prepared. We went on the guided Ghost Town Hike with Jeff. He explained the hike, told us what to expect and made sure we were prepared. It was a wonderful hike, going at a good pace for us, ascending about 250m through the forest to the coal excavation site. The views are spectacular. Jeff is extremely knowledgeable about the area - the forest and the history. We not only got some exercise but came away with a great appreciation for the forest as a whole. Thanks, Jeff, for a wonderful afternoon - we really appreciated each step and had some good laughs! Truly enjoyable. **Important Note** there is NO GHOST TOWN. This guided hike is poorly named but it in no way diminished our experience. Even other guides in town that we mentioned this hike to were confused as they had never heard of a ghost town around Canmore.Had the BEST hike and tour today! HUGE shout out to our guide Jeff 😁😁 from #kananaskisoutfitters - incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. If you want an awesome guide ask for Jeff!
