Wow! I was just so impressed by Johnny’s tour – and I’m someone who has lived in Durban previously for a year and who typically does not book formalized tours. The TL;DR is that I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to experience Durban markets, culture, and history. I found Johnny’s tour based on intel from friends that Durban CBD and the streets surrounding the markets were not safe for me flying solo with heavy photo equipment (I'm a photographer). What was I to do? I had been so excited to shoot street in Durbs returning after a decade away. The solution: book a tour! I was more than happy to pay the fee to have peace of mind regarding my gear. But instead, I got so much more: a well-rounded educational and culturally-immersive experience from a guide highly sensitive to his guests’ needs and interests. Upon hearing that I was interested in street photography, Johnny kindly and personally catered to this goal. He informed me which areas were a green light for photographing, gave me a heads-up on which particular market I should avoid for cultural sensitivity, and even brought along an extra colleague to ensure street safety. And what photo ops they were…gorgeous light and high contrast to shoot many compelling market scenes (after asking for happy permission from the vendors). Moreover, his descriptions of current affairs and history of Durban, transportation en combi mini bus, and chilled conclusion at the beachfront to enjoy lunch, all made this a highly worthwhile tour. Please be advised that although the tour is all-inclusive, you’ll want to bring along a few hundred more rand if you’re keen to try the cow head optional food stop (recommended) and for shopping at the markets (recommended if you’re keen on souvenirs at far lower prices than in the Cape). Needless to say, a whole-hearted endorsement! Thanks, Johnny!very good and interesting tour.
