After that heading to Dahshur. The pyramid field of Dahshur lies about 10 km south of Saqqara. The pyramids here include the famed Bent and Red Pyramids built by the 4th Dynasty king Senefru (father of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid). The Bent Pyramid is the second funerary monument of King Senefru's Complex after the Meidum Pyramid. the reason for its shape it was originally designed to rise at the angle of 52°, this was decreased to 43.5° partway up, and a girdle was built around the base, apparently because the foundations were unstable and the angle too steep for safety. The Red Pyramid, Seneferu's third funerary monument, is the first successful true (straight-sided) pyramid ever built. It's called red because of the reddish color of the stones used in its construction.

Fyi: We immensely enjoyed our 4 days in Cairo primarily because of our excellent guide Sabry who is an extremely knowledgeable Egyptiologist. Every single day felt like the trip of a lifetime with added memorable nuances! Sabry is personable, super kind and friendly and 1000% attentive & energetic even in Ramadan and whilst fasting. Because of his strategic planning, we were able to avoid the crowds and got to wherever we were earlier than anyone else and we had both the Tutankhamun Room at the Egyptian Museum and the Saqquara Pyramids essentially to ourselves (fantastic photo opportunities – he also knew exactly where/which angle to take professional grade shots). We are history nerds and also very interested in current issues and Sabry really brought to life the complex ancient history and recent events in Egypt and gave us deep insights into Islam (customs, art, prayers) throughout the millennia.Sabry is a living lexicon when it comes to history and is very good at communicating the complex events/family ties and linking the various sites. He did a brilliant job in making the complexity both comprehensible and accessible. Sabry was very flexible and accommodated our daily requests of ‘off the beaten track’ detours. We loved the barely visited M Mahmoud Khalil museum and the secret Italian Institute funded Sufi/dervish museum. Also, the tentmakers market really is contemporary Cairo and feels like an open-air museum. Mustafa, the driver, chauffeured us in the most experienced way and was always very courteous, efficient and flawlessly on time/ at the point when we needed him. Cairo traffic is intense and it was very hot, so it was a real luxury to just hop in/out of sites and have him wait with an airconditioned car. Mustafa’s English is also great which made the whole experience super seemless and very safe! Thank you. My husband and I are extremely pleased with every aspect of our Cairo trip as expertedly put together! For newbies to Cairo: do make an effort to explore Zamalek, Downtown/Garden City for a feel of modern Cairo and you’ll be richly rewarded. If you arrive in Ramadan, do book the the buffet dinner at the Four Seasons (Zitouni) – an out of this world foodie experience and worth the money. Try Talabat for healthy food deliveries (Self and Freshii do great salads/bowls) to the hotel when it’s too hot outside.. Suggestions: Get a listing of places to buy proper jewellery, artefacts, nice Egyptian cotton, sweets (we LOVED Simonds) etc..as opposed to touri-shops :-)Our day tour to Giza, Saqqara, and Dashur was incredible thanks to our amazing guide Sabry (Abdelazem) and driver Moustafa. Our day tour to Giza, Saqqara, and Dashur was incredible thanks to our amazing guide Sabry (Abdelazem) and driver Moustafa. From the moment we were picked up we knew the day was going to be amazing. Sabry was so passionate and enthusiastic and his excitement set the tone. We arrived to the Pyramids before the large crowds of tour buses and were able to enjoy the grounds largely to ourselves. Sabry took us on a journey of Ancient Egyptian history passionately telling the stories of the civilization and people who built these incredible structures. His English was amazing and we had no struggles to understand the information shared. We then traveled to Saqqara and Sabry took us off the beaten path of most tours where we were able to enter newly discovered tombs and active archaeological sites which we had all to ourselves- his knowledge was so vast and he shared a perfect story that also wasn't information overload. We drove further south to Dashur where he recommended we entered Red Pyramid which gives the same experience as the Great Pyramid but with way less people. During our journey we stopped in a small village where Sabry bought us falafel, egglplant, and pita for lunch which was a welcomed authentic and delicious meal. Saqqara is known for carpet making and we visited a carpet factory- the carpets were beautiful and the people were lovely. We did not buy anything and did not feel overly pressured to do so. Sabry took amazing photos of us (he loves iPhone photography) that we well cherish for the rest of our lives. This tour can truly be whatever you make it and the time is yours to do as you choose but we felt very well guided by Sabry. This was one of the first days of our adventure through Egypt and we wished we could have taken Sabry with us to all the major sites. If you book with Egypt Tailor made definitely request Sabry as your guide!I cannot praise too highly the efforts of Egypt Tailor Made and particularly of our guide Sabry in making our trio to Cairo such a wonderful experience. I cannot praise too highly the efforts of Egypt Tailor Made and particularly of our guide Sabry in making our trio to Cairo such a wonderful experience. It was the first visit of my son and myself to Egypt and I hoped I had made the right decision to use a local company to arrange this private tour (and one the following day to the Museum). We were not disappointed. As we are both interested in learning about the history and culture of Egypt I requested a guide who would fulfil these requirements. Sabry did a brilliant job in all respects, a knowledgeable Egyptologist who spoke excellent English. He was friendly without being familiar and went out of his way to ensure that we had a memorable day. He brought the history of the pharaohs and the pyramids to life and answered any questions we put to him. As I am not particularly adept with technology Sabry assisted with taking photos which I found very useful. Visiting the pyramids is not for the faint hearted and requires stamina but the effort that was put in to ensure we enjoyed our time there made it so worth while. We booked three nights in Cairo before flying to Luxor for a Nile cruise. In hindsight we should have stayed longer in Cairo and I would have no hesitation in using the services of Egypt Tailor Made, and of our wonderful guide Sabry, for any future visit to Egypt. I would advise anyone taking this tour to wear sturdy footwear, have sufficient bottled water (supplied to us as part of the tour) and have plenty of sun cream as the heat is intense. Incidentally, the cost of the tour was cheaper that the price quoted by the British company through whom we had booked the flight and accommodation.Ahead of our trip to Egypt we had done quite a bit of research on itineraries as well as organised tour companies… and I am so pleased to say that Egypt Tailor Made delivered on all our expectations! Ahead of our trip to Egypt we had done quite a bit of research on itineraries as well as organised tour companies… and I am so pleased to say that Egypt Tailor Made delivered on all our expectations! On our second day in Cairo we visited the Pyramids complex in Giza and ventured further afield to the sites of Dahshur & Saqqara. I could not recommend this day-tour enough, a totally amazing experience!! There were so many highlights that it is impossible to single them out, but the less travelled sites of Saqqara and Dahshur should be on everyone’s plan 😁 A big shout-out must go to the lovely Mrs Heba, our tour guide for the two days in Cairo and our driver Mr Mohamed. From Mrs Heba’s in-depth knowledge of Egyptian antiquities, history, and culture to Mr Mohamed’s professionalism and perseverance (in the face of Cairo traffic!!)… they both went above and beyond to make our visit so much more memorable. If you do find yourselves looking for a tour company in Egypt, you have to put Egypt Tailor Made at the top of your shortlist and definitely ask for Heba & Mohamed!!Laila our guide was fantastic! Extremely knowledgeable & professional. The driver was also very professional. We felt safe the entire time. They let us guide the pace of our tour also.

We spent one month touring Egypt and found Egypt Taylor Made to be the best investment possible. From meeting us at the airports and transporting us to our hotel, meeting us most days for marvelous visits to temples and tombs and museums, always in the company of kind and intelligent English speaking guides, ensuring multiple opportunities to explore local foods and graciously modify their programs to fit us as we learned more and our needs changed. We loved Egypt- the people, the history, the geography and of course the fine foods. We are already plotting a return for when the new Grand museum opens in Giza. We remain grateful to Omar Naguib for his effort to organize the very best for us, for Mr. Othman in guiding us with humor and wisdom in and around Cairo and Alexandria, for Mohamed S. and our times with him in Luxor and Aswan, always going the extra mile to meet our curiosity (and helping me secure a beautiful hand made galabeya that I love) and our most excellent drivers Mohamed and Yasser who helped me daily as my sciatica sometimes limited my motion. They got us safely and comfortably everywhere, always gracious. The Egypt Taylor Made team made our visit a seamless, truly first class adventure. I will certainly contract with them again on our next visit to beautiful Egypt.
