I was in two minds about going on a "Slum Tour", but after visiting, i'm not sure the name fits the activity, as what this really is, is exploring a neighbourhood with a guide. Something that people wouldn't think twice about if the name didn't include "Slum". My guide was Rakesh, and I was lucky enough to be his only customer today (a weekday off-season) so I basically had a private tour. We got the local train which was quite exciting and a nice change from taxis everywhere. On arrival we saw some of the commercial districts, residential areas, and a market. Rakesh was able to show me the areas and explain how the slum worked along with the controversial plans to redevelop the area. This area is busy and would be overwhelming to visit alone, so taking a local guide is a good thing. Rakesh lives in the area, and as like most guides, discourages any photography, especially in open areas of the neighbourhood. Overall it was great to see people thriving in the area, with successful businesses and people able to send their children to school among other things. This was the story of Dharvi slum and I am in no doubt other areas are very different. Would reccommend this tour to somebody who wants to see another side of Mumbai. We did a tour with Rakish through Dharavi and it was genuinely amazing! He showed us plenty of different businesses and workshops, the residential areas, schools and markets and was extremely knowledgable about everything that’s happening there, he left none of our questions unanswered. It was the best and most interesting tour we’ve done in India so far and I would recommend it to anyone curious about local life in Mumbai!
