Stop At: Kuldhara Abandoned Village, On the road to Sam Sand Dunes and the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer 345001 India
Kuldhara is an abandoned village in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, India. Established around the 13th century, it was once a prosperous village inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins. It was abandoned by the early 19th century for unknown reasons, possibly because of dwindling water supply, or as a local legend claims, because of persecution by the Jaisalmer State's minister Salim Singh. A 2017 study suggests that Kuldhara and other neighboring villages were abandoned because of an earthquake.
Duration: 25 minutes
Stop At: Khaba Fort, Khaba, Jaisalmer India
Khaba Fort is a ruined citadel set amid a barren desert village. It’s an architecturally impressive landmark full of eeriness, history and mysticism. Wander the dusty streets lined with crumbling houses and almost devoid of human activity. Khaba Fort dates back to the 13th century and was once an important part of Kuldhara, a village inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins. Sometime during the 1800s the residents fled the village and left behind a ghost town.

Loved it! Super relaxed, great hosts, only 3 guests. We stayed on a big sand dune in arid grazing country with no-one and nothing around. We rode the camels about 1 hour into the desert from the last small village so it felt really remote although it was only a one night stay. Total silence at night. sleeping on a bed with nice clean white sheets under the stars was a nice touch! I had phone signal which was unexpected but also good. The staff was amazing, vert kind and helpful, it is a great experience, you can be with the locals and learn about them and their culture.

To anyone planning on booking this tour. Please read my review after the description of the tour down here (Tour done on 27-Feb 2020) - Start at 2PM - Took a (very basic) minivan - Going South to see an Oasis and through villages + abandoned Fort - Drove till Camel Plac - Camel ride till Camp (Arrival a little before sunset) 1H30 - Dinner - Sleep outside | Open field - Breakfast - Camel Ride 30 min - Village visit - Come back by minivan 11AM Price Paid Onsite: 1750 INR (24 USD | 22 EUR) Here is my take: This tour was great but could still be improved and become even better than what we had. Positive things - Great English skills & accents - I was alone and managed to join other people (so it stays at affordable cost) - Small group (4 people + guide + camel owner) - Helpful guide with great knowledge and able to answer our questions - Local people that know the area very well - Enjoyable site, nice & beautiful quiet area - No tourist to be seen around - Great services: camps, 'unlimited food & water', driving around, convenient pick up & drop off.. - Fresh products cooking (w/ mineral water too) The negatives / things that can be improved; - Psychological push for tips: we pay 1750 INR, you can find similar tours for 1200-1300 INR. I want this tipping solution to be purely optional and GENUINE without having someone reminding you every 20 minutes that you can give. You're not forced to do, but indirectly YES. - I came in the desert w/ locals to be able to learn more about some stories / history of the place.. There was no stories, rare discussion coming upfront the guide and camel person. I want to be in contact with them, instead they want to eat on their sides and limit the contact with the tourists somehow. Keep on talking to each other in local dialect. Also, I was sold: someone singing some Rajasthani songs, it never happened. I prefer to be told that there won't be songs in that case than to fake something. - it doesn't always feel 100% natural to talk with them, they just do it for the money but don't enjoy it as much anymore. (guide & camel person) I understand that they're away from their family and doing this DAYS in a row, very courageous people to make it. My best advice is to be able to connect more with the people that come with you, let them the option to tip without pushing them, tell them some stories, try to learn and make them learn about Rajasthan origin, food, culture... Be a little more proactive and that would make a lot of a difference. Now this tour was great, I had lot of fun, I just wish it could have come more naturally from the guide side. We nearly feel like a 'too much' somehow. Great tour still, I can recommend it.. Make it better and you will get more tourists, more 'natural' tip and a more enjoyable work. Enjoy everyone! PS: if you're looking for a pure dunes experience, like a sandy experience - don't choose this tour. You're going to more a desert arid area like in Death Valley, just hard flat area with some dry trees and a tiny bit of dunes where you will stay and sleep and that's it! (Very beautiful too but DIFFERENT..) Some other tours offer pure sand tours, just ask! (see picture)Had a great time on a 2 day 1 night safari in the desert. Last October I visited Jaisalmer for the first time. As a huge admirer of Rajasthani culture and desert landscape I found myself just perfect in the place like Jaisalmer and its surroundings. I went to the camel safari two times: first with jeep to the place where village guys were waiting for us with camels, and we had overnight in the desert; second time with motorbike, organized by Diamond guest house, and had a really great fun and amazing experience. Also highly recommend eating at Diamond's, definitively the best food in Jaisalmer. And they listen great music there; actually the only place in Jaisalmer with the music (except for those with the live music performances), and sometimes also there live music on the roof :) Thank you, Gafur, and other guys for great time :)
