Can you picture yourself entering the infraworld through a cavern system with lots of interesting formations of minerals? The ancient Mayas used to believe that caves were the entrance to the infraworld where some of their deities lived. Caves are still a sacred place for our living Mayan culture in Guatemala.
It is believed that the word “Bombil” means in q’eqchí “Sacred Stone”. The caves were seen as a pilgrimage place and different ceremonies used to take place here to ask for good harvests, health, power, among other requests.
Ceramic pieces and skulls were found here as well as rock painting. The rock painting dates approximately 28 centuries back and this was the first place in Guatemala where rock paintings were discovered!
This will be a day full of adventure and surrounded by a lot of nature. Have fun by practicing rappeling to get down where the entrance to the caves is located. Discover the mineral formations inside and connect with the beliefs of an ancient culture.
