Our guide was Rafael who was absolutely excellent - personable, knowledgable and fun. There were only three of us, so it felt like an intimate experience with someone who was passionate about the island, culture and nature. It was one of the highlights of our time in Puerto Rico. The fairly short rainforest track was very muddy but we could wash everything off afterwards. It will ruin your shoes unless they are 'water shoes', so either take a spare pair of wet shoes for the swimming/jumping part or use wear proper wet/dry shoes. Overall a great day and highly recommended.Three of us did the "Off the Beaten Track" El Yunque Rainforest Hike with Carlos on Friday, July 5th, 2019. Three of us did the "Off the Beaten Track" El Yunque Rainforest Hike with Carlos on Friday, July 5th, 2019. It was a last-minute decision but one that we certainly didn't regret. Carlos was amazing! Given that it was a holiday weekend, it was still crowded but it was nice to be in such a small group with our guide. He was laidback but informative, as well as very responsive and caring to our small trio of hikers. I would recommend this tour, and Carlos in particular, to anyone and everyone!!!I originally booked for a Monday, and they contacted me and told me I was the only person who had booked that day, so I had to choose another day. I originally booked for a Monday, and they contacted me and told me I was the only person who had booked that day, so I had to choose another day. I reshuffled my entire trip and changed other reservations so I could move this to Friday. On Friday, after waiting outside for 40 minutes, the van showed up and was too full to fit me. They offered no alternative solutions. This is my last day, and too late to book another trip, so I won't be able to go to the rainforest. This was my birthday trip and the thing I was looking forward to most. I even lugged around heavy hiking boots in my luggage just for this. I would give it negative stars if I could. DO NOT BOOK.Our guide was 40 minutes late to meet us. While we were waiting, someone from the company keep calling and telling us to drive up the road and get a smoothie at a fruit stand. Our guide was 40 minutes late to meet us. While we were waiting, someone from the company keep calling and telling us to drive up the road and get a smoothie at a fruit stand. Ummm, no, I paid for a rainforest tour, not a smoothie. The day before our tour the company sent a text saying we would need to pay cash to park ($10) and enter ($2/person). What did I prepay for? Once there, our guide was very nice. He helped our children climb and jump off rocks a lot. That’s important and one thing I really appreciated. Otherwise, our guide didn’t tell us anything about the forest. No animals, insects or plants to speak of. The river and rocks were cool but where we live in PA, we have creeks and waterfalls so this wasn’t extra. We were there the week before Easter so the river was packed with other groups. It definitely was NOT off the beaten path. Other guides were letting not so fit people scale up wet rock walls with out any protection so that worried me; not so peaceful. I want to be supportive since the economy in PR needs help after Maria. I feel bad making a comment that might influence travelers against this tour, but I also want people to be safe and get what they pay for.Carlos Gonzalez was our tour guide. He was amazing! Carlos Gonzalez was our tour guide. He was amazing! He was very patient and offered great conversation. He provided knowledge about the forest and Puerto Rico. We were lucky because it was more a private tour. There was no rain and the water wasnt too cold. I highly recommend wearing water shoes because the rocks are rough. In addition you should bring a snack and towels. You'll have an opportunity to use the restroom at the beginning of the trip afterwards good luck. 4 hours is all you need out here. It is off a beaten path.. and other tour guides will be in the area. You have the option to climb higher and see the bigger water fall or to stay at the first location. Overall the views are beautiful and Carlos was fun!I went with a group of 8th graders and Carlos was our tour guy, we had a blast. We swung off a cliff into the water, slide down a naturally made stone slide. HIGHLY recommend. Definitely, the highlight of our trip!
