Stop At: Lipton’s Seat, Haputale 90160 Sri Lanka
Lipton’s Seat is perhaps the most popular attraction in Haputale. Situated an hour away from Haputale town, Lipton’s Seat is a viewpoint named after the celebrated Thomas Lipton. He was a Scottish businessman who moved to British Ceylon in 1890, where he met James Taylor and together they introduced tea gardens to the country. Prior to Lipton’s arrival, Taylor had attempted to grow coffee on the island, however, the coffee plantations were devastated by a leaf-blight. With Lipton’s help, the two men embarked on a business venture which would outlive their lifetimes.
A Viewing Point Like No Other
Lipton’s Seat is a popular vantage point, from where Thomas Lipton would sit with a cup of tea in hand and proudly look over his estate. Today, you can still have one of the best views from the lookout, and there is even a life-sized statue of Lipton on a bench to take pictures with! It is recommended that you go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the late-morning fog.

The Tourguide Shashicka is very nice and courteous. Thanks to him we had a very nice and unforgettable shuttle transport from Ella to Arugam Bay. For us it was not a typical transport but a very nice and positive experience. During the trip he explained us a lot about the island Sri Lanka and had nice breaks with us for a cup of tea and a wonderful view. Shashicka also showed us many fruits from Sri Lanka, which we tried together. He loves and respects nature very much and has told us a lot of interesting details about the Island. Also he showed us mountains and plants during the trip and told us many good tips. For example where we could have a drink and where we should be more careful. The trip was very nice and he drove well, so we always felt safe. The price was also cheaper than all other shuttle transports. We would very much like to go with him again or also undertake some tours with him together. If you are looking for a Tourguide or a driver who can tell you many interesting facts about Sri Lanka and is looking for passion for nature, then he is your right man for it. A tour with Shashicka is highly recommended.Very good guide who showed us around Ella and the surrounding area. We had an excellent day, he took the time to explain and made us great memories. I booked a one and a half day tour with Shashicka to explore famous spots in Ella region such as the Little Adams Peak, Lipton Seat, the tea factory etc. He knows the best photo spots and would share interesting facts and knowledge about Sri Lanka at different sites. Follow him as a guide and he will take the best photos for you at different angles. This man is also genuine and wants the best experience for his tourists. At the peak of Lipton seat, he explained and showed me how a family of locals usually get by with their cooking. I was really humbled as I get a little taste of the local experience, and to see first hand how generous these people are. Finally, he also invited me to his home for a home-cooked dinner by his family and I really appreciate the gesture by him. He also gave me many tips to prevent locals from overcharging me, ensuring that your budget is well managed. Overall, Shashicka is one of the best and friendly guide you can find in Ella and I would recommend him :)
