Exploring Johannesburg through Skateboarding - incl. skate lesson for beginners!
Overview
Johannesburg sometimes has a negative and controversial reputation as a city and so does skateboarding - this tour is about challenging these ideas!
By looking at the inner city through the eyes of a skater and life-long resident of Johannesburg, we challenge these stereotypes and look at how we can build a more skateboard and people friendly city in Johannesburg!
If you've ever wanted to learn how to skate or are interested in learning more about the city of Johannesburg - or are just looking for something different to do - then this tour is for you!
We love skateboarding and we love our city, we want to share both of them with all of you and the world!
Inclusions
- Skateboards, Knee Pads, Elbow Pads, Wrist Guards, and Helmets!
- Basics of Skateboarding lesson i.e. how to stand, push, turn and stop on a skateboard
- Transport back to the start/meeting point at Curiocity Backpackers after the tour ends!
What to expect
The experience starts in Maboneng (one of the world's 12 coolest neighbourhoods - Forbes 2018) with a skate lesson before skating around this developing neighbourhood and experiencing its vibrant and diverse street life made up of public art, street vendors and restaurants!
We then take an Uber to Marshalltown where you see some of the city's oldest buildings while learning about the skateboarding culture in this area - we also visit some popular skate spots along the way and discuss how to create a more skate and pedestrian-friendly city!
The tour ends in Newtown (caught between urban "decay" and urban regeneration) which is rich in graffiti, street art and a popular night time spot for many locals!
The tour is a mixture of factual information and my own personal views about the cities urban development and what improvements and changes I would like to see in the city!
As skateboarders, cities are our urban playgrounds - this experience is all about looking at the city through the eyes of a skater!
This experiences is designed to accommodate all skill levels - from experienced to beginner, don't worry if you've never skated before, we'll teach you in no time!

The City Skate Tour of Jo’burg was exceptional and a highlight of my first visit to Johannesburg. As an urban planner I love cities and am interested in how cities grow and change. The tour that Ayanda led included street art, history, architecture, urban planning and development, and politics. The ground level view provided by skateboarding (and some walking since I’m a newbie skater) really enabled you to gain a unique perspective. My 14 year old son who travels with his own skateboard just loved it. If you want a unique way to experience Johannesburg I highly recommend you book the 3-hour full tour you will not regret it!City Skate Tour is a highly recommended way of experiencing and moving through the Inner City of Joburg. City Skate Tour is a highly recommended way of experiencing and moving through the Inner City of Joburg. Ayanda explained in the beginning how to ride and stop and gave us some time to get used to the skateboard. We practiced on a quiet bit of Foxstreet before we headed out towards Maboneng. I felt super safe throughout the entire trip, knowing Ayanda always had our backs! This tour is so awesome because it's an unusual way of experiencing a city. More importantly, it's such an exciting way to indulge in Joburg's street life, learn about the places' history as well as Ayanda's personal view on how to conquer public urban spaces such as Joburg's Inner City. Thank you for a fun weekend adventure!Entire experience was amazing and unique. Ayanda made it both historical, professional and personal. Would highly recommend.

We did the E(ast) Scooter Tour with Ayanda. It was clearly the best way to discover this extraordinary city. Ayanda grew up in a neighbourhood of Joburg, so he takes you off the touristic roads to discover the reality of this city. What better way to enjoy a weekend with friends than with a local, very friendly and passionate about his city. We don’t see the time passing, thanks again !
