Stop At: Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, 8 Boulevard de Menilmontant, 75020 Paris France
Your rendez-vous with Paris’ famous dead begins in the morning at Alexandre Dumas metro station. Meet your english-speaking guide and stroll into Père Lachaise Cemetery, the city’s most visited graveyard. Spanning 110 acres (44 hectares), this cemetery houses hundreds of thousands of the city’s famous and infamous dead in tombs of varying extravagance.
Hear about some of the site’s famous artists, musicians and writers that rest here such as Edith Piaf, Molière, Chopin, Proust, Delacroix, Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. Wander through the labyrinth of graves and along stony paths to visit tombs accented in eccentricity and distinction. As you experience the haunting magnificence of the cemetery, you’ll learn tragic histories of lovers like Heloïse and Abelard – united in a single tomb in the 1817 after centuries apart – and forward-thinking women like writers Gertrude Stein and Collette. Your 2-hour tour concludes at Porte du Rèpos near the Philippe Auguste metro stop.

This tour lasts about 2 hours and is a nice introduction to the cemetery. You see around 8 of the most famous residents and get some background about their lives. The pace is gentle although there cobbles and steeper hills, so good footwear is recommended. Hamish was our guide and he was very knowledgable and engaging. If you want to do this tour, I would recommend that you download the map to familiarise yourself with the locations of the entrances and exits (there is a toilet at the exit we were dropped off at), take a picnic (although there are many cafes nearby) and then continue exploring after the tour ends. Our guide arrived about 5 minutes late. Our guide arrived about 5 minutes late. I understand. She rushed through the cemetery which we found to be a fascinating place. The tour finished at 11:20 which was 40 minutes early. We did not get to see several famous graves including Chopin. We enjoyed what we saw but were disappointed in the shortened tour. The tour guide seemed to be in a huge hurry to be somewhere else. The cemetery is huge and to try and find it by ourselves would be a nightmare. The tour was fantastic and took us to see the highl!ights. What a great tour!
