Via an online booking in July 2019 we arranged a day of kayaking for New Years Day 2020 for four adults and were absolutely delighted with our experience. We had the exclusive services of Jake for the day who - as others have said - is extremely knowledgeable about the geography and fauna of the area, we could not have asked for a better guide for our day. I'm assuming that weather conditions and group experience dictate the plan for the day, but in our case we were driven out along Queen Charlotte Drive to Ngakuta Bay where we launched after a recap of equipment and safety. Spray decks, dry bags and spray tops (if required) were provided. We spent the morning exploring bays off the Grove Arm - essentially exploring the coastline that the Queen Charlotte Track goes through - which is unspoiled by vehicular access. Lunch (and toilet stop) was taken ashore at the Mistletoe Eco Camp Site, the far end of the QCT. A great lunch of sandwiches, cakes and real fresh coffee made over a stove was provided. The return journey took in more of the coastline before a crossing of the open waters of the Grove. The wind had picked up a bit but the tandem kayaks have a broad beam and are extremely stable so had no difficulty in navigating the waves. It was clear that our guide had a contingency plan if we'd been uncomfortable with the conditions or ran out of steam and that support from base was on hand if required. We had a great and memorable adventure and I wouldn't hesitate to use the services of Wilderness Guides again, this is a very well run operation. Book with confidence and create your own adventure! The full day sea kayak guided tour is safe, well provisioned and enjoyable. We had kayaks and paddles which were in excellent condition. Waterproof sea bags kept our stuff dry. The spray skirts and life jackets were clean and comfortable. Alex, our guide was patient and competent. His local knowledge enabled us to spy numerous short and long tailed stingrays in sheltered coves. We also chanced upon seals sunbathing on a rocky outcrop. The highlight, however, was encountering a pod of playful dolphins who swam amongst our kayaks and breached the water numerous times in a display of grace and power. It was quite an experience indeed! Lunch on a quiet beach with toilet facilities comprised fresh fruit, delicious sandwiches, chocolate chip slices and coffee. What a wonderful day on the water! A great introduction to Queen Charlotte Sound! As there were no one else except for my husband and I, we were fortunate to have the pleasure of a private tour by our very knowledgeable and friendly guide, Jake. As there were no one else except for my husband and I, we were fortunate to have the pleasure of a private tour by our very knowledgeable and friendly guide, Jake. Jake is well-travelled and has a vast knowledge of NZ history and the surrounding region. He could almost give you a background story of anything that we spot along our kayak trip - from the trees to the birds and the seal that we spotted having a sun bath and a back rub up on someone's holiday home deck. The water was still and crystal clear that we've even managed to spot a few baby jellyfishes (tiny non-poisonous ones) along the way. As we opted for a full day tour, lunch was included as part of the package. We had a delicious chicken sandwich from the local bakery, Whittakers choc, orange juice and were given the choice of tea or coffee. We had a nice lovely picnic on one of the nearby beaches. Overall a lovely way to check out the beauty of the region especially if it's your first time. Our tour was just amazing! Our tour was just amazing! So to get started we moved our tour to the following day because the weather condicions werant good and it was definitely worth to wait. So instead of the Kajaking we decided to rent some bikes at there place and see how good the bike trails are. To make it short, they are great and in our oppinion if you're a bit fit you deffentily can do it! Lets go back to our kayaking experience... We had an awsome winter day with no wind in the morning, a few clouds and just an awsome temperature. Our guide Martyn was just incredible he was able to teach us so much about the region, wildlife and just the whole country. We had the chance to see a lot of sealions and dolphins. Lucky as we where we saw some of the smalest penguins in the wold. To be honest if you don't take a tour with them you make a big mistake! They know what they do, they are super friendly and helpfull and they want that you'll have the gratest tour. Don't miss out on them! This trip exceeded our expectations. This trip exceeded our expectations. We had the privelege of spending around an hour in the midst of a group of NZ fur seals swimming around close to the shore in the bay we set off from and our guide Alex was able to find and show us a wide range of sealife throughout the day. As it was a midwinter trip we were a bit anxious about the weather, but it was calm and warm and extremely quiet as there weren't many other boats on the Sound. Great lunch and friendly well-informed guide. An amazing kayak trip, scenic views and great information from guide Shaun. He was very informative and fun to spent the day with. We were lucky with the beautiful autumn weather and calm sea. Yummy lunch and coffee provided on a great picnic spot! Highly recommended!
