What to expect
Eilein a Cheò (Skye) is in itself a microcosm of all things Highland and indeed Scottish. On this one stretch of beautiful landscape, over 50 miles long but never more than a few miles wide, there can be found the modern day and ancestral homes of two of the great Clans of Scotland, The MacDonalds at Armadale and the MacLeods of Dunvegan.
Here too is the scene of a British Naval frigate with over 400 marines being sent to put down resistance by crofters. The marines were on the Island for some six months following the Battle of the Braes near Portree where during the Highland Clearances 50 police dispatched from Glasgow to evict the people from their homes were challenged and seen off, mainly by the womenfolk.
Unique in political history this Island and the neighbouring Western seaboard returned 4 members of parliament to Westminster in 1885. They had no party affiliation other than they were all from the crofting community. Their determined collective spirit won them the protection of the Crofting Land Act in 1886.
Some of the oldest mountains in the world, the Black Cuillins are here, created by violent volcanic eruption millions of years ago. The lochs, in turn, a by product of the melting glacial bergs from the Ice Age.
“Talisker”, the Island’s famous Malt Whisky, is distilled at Carbost.
We take a different route home over the Auchtertyre Brae with its panoramic views into Strathcarron down into Achnasheen, Garve and the Kessock Bridge.

Andrew MacDonald our private tour driver was a “Amazing”!!!The goal was to visit Dunbeath Castle north in the highlands where my Grandmother worked 125 years ago with my daughters. We contacted Andrew before traveling with a few places we wanted to visit he accomplished that and more. We had an appointment at 11:00 am garden tour at the castle with Neil (the gardener such a sweet man). We stopped at Dunbeath Heritage Centre (to learn some family history) Neil Gunn memorial in the harbour Andrew was so patient with us. We were in aw of everything he let us take it all in. Andrew kept us on schedule but added so much more by singing to us (a beautiful voice) no radio needed 🥰We had the full experience going off the main road to pick Heather in the highlands, seeing the hills and glens, stopped at an extra castle to view Dunrobin Castle, stopped at a memorial for Sir John a MacDonald in the hills we didn’t know existed so many memories made!!! Andrew kept us safe on the narrow roads with so much historical knowledge of the area we would have never known without him. I can’t tell you how much we appreciated you which made the one day out of our 7 days tour of Scotland the most precious. My heart is over flowing you made a dream come true I can’t Thank you enough! Please ask for Andrew MacDonald you won’t be disappointed! Till me meet again my friend safe travelsGreat tour of the Highlands and the Isle of Skye! Castles. Whisky tasting, scenic view stops! We were very concern about this trip as we were traveling with a 2 years old child. But the tour was amazing. The car was comfortable, it was provided a seat car for our daughter, Andrew drives safe and he was so kind and nice with us, told us lot of good history and the places visited! It was excellent. Thank you Andrew! The Isle of Skye has been a remote part of Scotland. Now with a bridge and thousands of tourists, its uniqueness is eroding. It is still possible to find pockets of the old. But the geography is beautiful and not yet overrun. There are interesting small towns to visit.
