Apo, our tour guide, met us in Canakkale for the ferry ride from the European side to the Gallipoli coast. We started with a great lunch and easy conversation leading to a ride to the ANZAC battlefields. We were told of the prelude to the Gallipoli campaign and how it unfolded over the next four hours. Apo was extremely well versed in the historical as well as the cultural side of the event with interesting anecdotes about people and events as they related to the Gallipoli campaign. I’ve never been a fan of organized tours but this was the pleasant exception, a small group with a lot of interaction. Visiting English speaking tourists could do a whole lot worse than having Apo walk them through the 8 1/2 months of carnage that was the Gallipoli Campaign. I have been on many tours and found this one to be particularly good. The organization and timing were smooth - I simply showed up and everything was well arranged and went to plan. The lunch provided was delicious, and the van we were driven in was very nice. Best of all was our tour guide Apo. I had read positive reviews about him already, and he exceeded my expectations with his knowledge, respect, and balance of being engaged with guests while giving space. The Gallipoli tour is not so fun given it’s content - but I felt this tour was very worthwhile and has made a special memory for this time in Turkey. Our guide Apo provided a detailed account of the campaign from both an allied and Turkish perspective. Apo's descriptions were very informative and delivered with great respect for those who suffered in the Gallipoli campaign.
