What could have been a bit of a downer turned out to be far better than I had hoped for! We arrived at 1000 outside Christophe’s garage entrance to find him expecting one American and not us. The American, Tom turned up a few moments later and we sorted out bikes to fit. After we were going, I checked and found that my fat finger had booked for four weeks later, Tom had arrived a day early with jet lag the previous day, so we were a right bunch. The bikes are fat wheel mountain bikes with Shimano derailleurs so if it isn’t shorts weather bring a clip for your flappy right trouser leg. Comfortable seats and really low gears so easy on the small hills in Ghent. The tour headed out to the quiet parts of the city south and east of the fleshpots, taking in history ancient and fairly modern, places you just will not find are opened up, the reasons why places are as they are are explained. You cycle through old lanes down the canal paths over bridges on park paths grottos and slowly get the idea as to how much cyclists have the road. Christophe is a great bike handler and when necessary just stopped the traffic to get us over to the next small turn, the trams, trucks and cars stopping without protest! How I long for that in London! We finished up back at Christophe’s place 2 1/2 to 3 hours later having seen a side of the city hidden away and had plenty of laughs along the way. There were three in our group which was great, more would be just as good. We had not met Tom before the start but enjoyed a hot choccy with home at the end. Christophe was prepared to have only had Tom on this trip, and hadn’t tried to put him off as a solo client. Impressive. We loved the ride, Christophe, if you are coming to Ghent do this early in your trip, and you’l spread your wings round the city far better than just going round the big tourist sights and shopping for more stuff you don’t need. You don’t have to be young to do this, just reasonably competent on a bike! I don’t know if there are other bike tours, if there are, don’t bother with them, go on this one! This is an interesting way to discover Ghent outside the beaten track visiting both old and new sites in the city. This is an interesting way to discover Ghent outside the beaten track visiting both old and new sites in the city. I would recomment to use a fitness tracker in order to locate places of interest one would like to re-visit. It is also important to note that it is not necessary to be a strong cyclist, as there are not that many hills in the city - and they are few and far between. What a fabulous experience! I would always recommend a bike tour for exploring a new city and this was a great one! The best way to start our holiday. Christoph took us through a mixture of places we would never have gone to, places everyone should visit and ones we stored away to go back to later on. He recommended places to eat and to visit and it was clear that he loved Gent, and showing us his favourite places. The bikes were great - really well maintained and easy to ride. The whole thing was at our pace so don't feel intimated! You know you've had a good time when you hear that someone else is going to Gent and your first recommendation is this!Had a wonderful behind-the-scenes tour of Ghent! Thank you Chris for your patience with a novice biker! Highly recommend this tour as Chris is helpful, knowledgable, and very accommodating.
