Half Day Hadrian’s Wall Guided Tour
Overview
The Romans always intended to conquer Britain. Julius Caesar wrote about the riches of the British Isles... and also of giants and monsters. While Caesar made initial contact with the peoples of Britain, a full scale invasion would take another 90 years. Political turmoil in Rome was the catalyst for the new emperor, Claudius to bring his forces to the shores of Britain, changing the country forever.

The guided tour was excellent due to the knowledge of the guide, Kevin, and his presentation of the information. For roughly 2 hours we walked the wall and the small fort near Cawfield Quarry with interesting explanations of the how and why the wall was built. The tour then went to Vindolanda, a large fort with extensive archaeological finds well presented in the museum. Kevin provided nice explanations of the artifacts. Highly recommended.Kevin deserves all these glowing reviews! I wasn’t sure whether to go for the 2 hour or half day trip and I’m very glad we booked the longer one. Kevin deserves all these glowing reviews! I wasn’t sure whether to go for the 2 hour or half day trip and I’m very glad we booked the longer one. The first half was a trip to Hadrian’s wall itself and the second half was to vindalandia. In both cases we were able to appreciate it so much better with Kevin’s help. At the wall we learnt about the context of the society, why and how the wall was built and how it operated. At vindalandia he showed us the key buildings which really helped us under what we were looking at, and then after a lunch stop, the key pieces in the museum. Throughout he was clear and engaging to listen to. He was also very friendly and keen to meet all the varying needs of the group.
