My future brother-in-law Dean and I were in Liverpool for a few days primarily to attend the Merseyside Derby as big Reds fans. We were looking for other things to do so decided to book the Peaky Blinders half day tour. Now we like the show but wouldn’t say we’re experts on it but we were really looking forward to the tour. We met our group of around 40-50 people at the majestic St George’s Hall in central Liverpool which features lots in the show. Our guide was Gary Friday and right from the off he put everyone at ease calling out our names of the booker and finding out their guests names and where they were from rather than scanning a QR code on our phone. After a short intro and a few stories we made our way to the coach. What I love about Gary is that he clearly adores his city but he doesn’t see it through rose tinted spectacles. He’s very self deprecating of it. Did you know you can secure a filming location in Liverpool for a Mars Bar and a packet of crisps!! The coach tour in itself was brilliant. The banter between Gary and the driver was brilliant. They’re like a bickering married couple. Gary’s knowledge on his subject and Liverpool in general is incredible and I never saw him reading from a script like on many tours. And how he remembers everybody’s names is beyond me. We went to loads of locations which are all accompanied by a scene from the show which plays on the coach. A highlight was seeing Pollys house at the model village of Port Sunlight. Such a beautiful place and almost worth the cost of the tour alone. We had a tea break at Port Sunlight and Gary came and sat with me and Dean. He’s an Everton fan and so the banter was flowing. What I liked is how he spoke directly to Dean as he is deaf, so he could lip read. Such a caring bloke. We finished our trip at the filming location for the Garrison. They’re redeveloping the location into luxury apartments so I’d advise anyone who wants to see this key location to do the tour as soon as possible. Now the tour is described as 4 hours but we actually over ran (nobody complained) and somebody had a pre -booked table that they needed to get to at the Peaky Blinders bar. This is what really blew me and Dean away. The coach driver offered to take the guests to the bar and Gary asked if anybody else would like to go to. After dropping off the majority of the party at St George’s Hall, around a dozen of us, me and Dean included went on a mini pub crawl. We went to The Peaky Blinders Bar, Punch Tarmey’s (which is stunning and another filming location) and The Philharmonic in Liverpool town centre which has the most beautiful gents toilets you’ve ever seen. It was amazing how Gary got a group of strangers at the start of the day to get on so well together and have such a laugh that a large group wanted to change plans and stay together well into the evening. It was more than a tour, was a beautiful experience that will remain with us forever. Eventually we had to leave to go and see The Cavern Beatles at the Cavern Club but that’s another story…. I love Liverpool. Oh and we won 2-0.What a day!!! From start to finish it was brilliant! We went on this tour yesterday and Gary our tour guide was amazing! Very friendly, funny and so knowledgeable. We learnt so much about the peaky blinders film locations and also about Liverpool in general. Watching the clips on the coach whilst seeing the places in real life has made me want to watch it all over again. We enjoyed it so much that we would do the tour again! Thanks Gary :)
