Stop At: Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street), Jishan Street, Ruifang, New Taipei 22450 Taiwan
With an unmatched old town atmosphere and seaside flair, Jiufen is a must see spot when visiting northern Taiwan. Always teeming with tourists, you might notice that Japanese people make up a huge proportion of the crowds gathered. Many are keen to catch a glimpse of the setting of Hayao Miyazaki's Academy Award winning “Spirited Away”, especially the iconic red lanterns. This is also a film mecca for lovers of Taiwanese film, especially fans of Hou Hsiao-hsien's “A City of Sadness”, which utilized Jiufen as the backdrop to the events of the 228 Incident. Given Hou’s recent award of Best Director in the 2015 International Cannes Film Festival for his new film “The Assassin”, we expect even more people will make their way here in years to come.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Stop At: Shifen Waterfall, No.10 Gankeng Road, Nanshan Village, Pingxi, New Taipei 226 Taiwan
Shifen Waterfall is the most renowned cascading waterfall in Taiwan. The watercourse is from Keelung River, height 20 m. (66 ft.) and width 40 m. (131 ft.).

Stop At: Shifen Old Street, Pingxi, New Taipei Taiwan
Shifen Old Street is a bustling hub for those eager to get a glimpse of an old railroad town which still retains the charm of yesteryear. Originally built to transport coal, the Shifen Old Street stop has now become one of the most popular on the Pingxi rail-line. It is easy to see why so many are drawn here - local food, souvenir shops and puffing trains add to the charm of this little gem, as well as make it a fantastic place for photography.

My partner and I had a great time in Shifen and Jiufen. The highlight was definitely the sky lantern in Shifen, and seeing the sunset in Jiufen. Our guide Allen was great and shared lots of insights and history about the places we visited.

We really enjoyed our time in Shifen, Jiufen, at lunch, and at the additional waterfall. The views of the Shifen waterfall were fabulous, and paired well with the following sky lantern activity. We got a timely start, beating some of the crowds at Shifen, which was a plus! During our time at Jiufen, Tim, our guide, showed us a temple and explained some of the worship practices there. He was knowledgeable about history of the area as well, and regarding local / traditional snacks / food / tea recommendations. Overall, Tim was a knowledgeable and pleasant guide. Having Tim as a guide, driver, and translator (English - Chinese) was very helpful. This tour enriched our experience in the area and I would recommend this to others considering a day trip or half-day trip from Taipei to beautiful areas nearby on the North Coast! We had a terrific time on our tour. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the area, and he treated us very well. Highly recommended!
We had a terrific time on our tour. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the area, and he treated us very well. Highly recommended! This is a very good tour for the price, but be aware that our driver/guide had limited English and provided no commentary. That being said, he was very friendly, was a good driver, and guided us through each of attractions.
