The half day tour allowed us to recover from our lengthy flight and still get a great glimpse into some history of Johannesburg and Soweto. The on time pickup at the hotel and comfortable transportation was excellent as well.

If you need someone to drive you around the itinerary it’s ok. But it’s not a guided tour. We agreed to meet at the apartheid museum at 1.30 pm and the guide arrived at 2.15 “stuck in traffic”. He handed over the museum’s tickets and said be outside at four. This is not guided. And 1.45 hrs is not enough for the museum since they recommended at least 2.30 hrs. We then head with another driver because ours was again “stuck in traffic “ to Soweto. They dropped us at Mandela’s house with volunteers. Then we should have gone into a walking tour we passed flying in the van to “see” the main points of the uprising. Then we were again dropped at the Hector Pieterson museum with a volunteer guide. Honestly we expected more. This was an enlightening tour. This was an enlightening tour. While we were supposed to go to the Apartheid Museum, we were notified the evening before that the Apartheid Museum was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. While disappointed, we went with the flow. Constitutional Hill was substituted--which was fantastic! First we went to Soweto and then we went to Constitutional Hill. The Soweto tour gave us a view of the role its residents played in protesting the South African apartheid government and also gave us a current view of investments in the township and present-day life. There are extremes in terms of wealth and poverty in Soweto. We went to Mandela's houses, Hector Pieterson Square, Kliptown, and Regina Mundi Church. The tour guides made it interesting and we were glad we went. The tour of Constitution Hill was hard and outstanding, albiet disturbing (the jail) and inspiring (South African Constitutional Court). If you've visited Robben Island, the jail at Constitutional Hill also housed Mandela as well as other famous political leaders, including Mahatma Ghandi (obviously, not at the same time). The only suggestion we would make is to take snacks. There was not a lunch break, and our kids got really hungry by the end of the tour and we hadn't packed snacks as we thought we'd stop somewhere. The tour was superb.. However, a microphone during our van ride would have probably made the experience even better.
