This was my first time doing a walking tour of my own city and it wont be my last! A fun, energetic and super informative evening full of history, ghosts and sight seeing. By far one of the best ways to get to know the city as both a tourist and a local, Donovan's knowledge of the spaces and people really opens up a part of the city even long time residents can be impressed with. The storytelling is engaging and fun and I could have listened to another few hours easily. Not to mention they are very patient and welcoming ! This was my first experience of a ghost walk, and it was fantastic! Our guide, the Professor, was a delightful and eccentric character with something interesting (and often funny) to say about every spot we stopped in. I learned a lot about local history, especially the heartbreaking details of the refugees from the Irish Famine, and was simultaneously spooked by the tales of the ghosts still haunting the places where they died. The stories of Arthur Carr and Mary Gallagher were particularly memorable -- the former for its poignancy and the latter for its horror. I heartily recommend this tour for anyone with 90 minutes to spare and a pair of comfortable walking shoes. You'll be mesmerized. My boyfriend wanted to do the haunted walk of Griffentown with the Profressor for his birthday so we did. He had a wonderful time. Took the Saturday evening tour with Donovan as the Guide and it was a Great tour. About ninety minutes walking through Griffintown and loved it. We can't see this part of Montreal on our own because the buildings reveal nothing without description. Donovan is an historian and Montreal born and bred. (Although he wasn't a rapid Canadians fan which I didn't think was allowed in Quebec) He even speaks some of the First Nations Mohawk language Kahnieakehake and meets with their people often. (I'm sure spelled Kahnieakehake incorrectly) The tour stresses Griffintown's Irish and the incomprehensible conditions from around 1700 to the twentieth century and many of their Ghost stories. Some of these tales are fun but some are very sad. The Canalside walk was my favorite part. The waters are known for countless photos of Ghostly "Orbs." The awful tale about the little boy on the bridge was enough to make me cry. All of Donovan's stories are backed up with facts and naturally must include poor Mary Gallagher searching for her missing head. With the exception of Simon McTavish sliding down Peel Street on his own coffin (My very favorite ghost story of them all) all of Montreal's best ghost stories are found in Griffintown. Don't miss this one because it's horrific but great fun. Sincerely AlanWonderful tour on the anniversary of the murder of Mary Gallagher. Fascinating history delivered in an entertaining fashion. Great value for your dollar.
