Overall, while I wish that the boat ride could have gone to Glacier Bay, it was a highlight of Alaska. In the midst of almost every business facing uncertainty my call to HTA could not have been more pleasant. We did a whale watching tour with Hoonah Travel Adventures while cruising through Alaska. Everything from booking through to the excursion exceeded my expectations. I had emailed the office to ask about the rate for a group of 8 and no sooner had I sent an email advising we would book I received a phone call from the team (even though I am in Australia) to complete the process. So easy! The bus to the boat was a short walk from the cruise ship terminal. We then boarded our boat - it seated about 20 people. The crew were amazing sharing stories about life in Hoonah and, of course, whales. We saw so many whales. It was peaceful on the water and you could hear the sounds of whales from every direction. Two whales even swam right under our boat. I was too busy admiring them to video it but the crew shared their video with us so we could show friends at home our amazing experience. We spent six weeks on holiday in the USA and Canada and all of my family, including the kids say this excursion was the highlight of our trip. Highly recommended!Hoonah took us straight to the whales. We got so close we actually got wet from the spray out of their blow hole. We saw one breach and got in front of then so that they were swimming toward us.

They say life is defined by the moments that take your breath away, and if thats the case, our afternoon spent on this whale watching adventure was a very defining moment. Absolutely amazing!! Our guides told us from the get go that we would be headed to a spot about 30-40 minutes away, and would possibly be passing up some whales in the process, but the trip would be worth it. Boy was it. They took us to a spot where a group of humpbacks were 'cooperatively feeding'. Y'all....thats is bubble netting!! We spent almost an hour with the group as they moved along the shoreline. Giving us beautiful visuals as they flipped their flukes to dive, then we waited...enjoying the quiet. Then the sea birds would squack and head to the next spot, alerting us to the surfacing of the whales. It was simply magical. The guides were friendly and outgoing, sharing their wealth of knowledge about their island home, and the animals that share their space. We saw the whales, otters, and birds. It was a perfect way to spend my birthday afternoon, and one I'll never forget. If you are thinking about doing this 'tour'.....DO IT! Do it multiple times if you get the opportunity. I don't regret a minute of it or the $$$ we spent.
