What to expect
After passing through town we begin with a bit of a warmup ride on a road usually thronged with kids on bikes, making their way to school. Water buffalo might be seen, chewing lazily as they watch you pass. Before too long we'll leave this tar road and find narrower trails through bamboo forests and along the edges of fields full of crops and flowers. Molasses production, rice milling, planting, harvesting - there's always a lot going on in these villages and the kids will almost certainly be out in force to cheer you along. We'll make sure to have some special stops along the ride to check out highlights and snap some great pictures.
After moving briefly to wider roads we'll arrive in the small town of Khaung Daing. Here we'll ride through, stopping to see medieval bread kilns, tofu production, rice wine distilling, rice cracker drying and maybe some bright red chillies being bagged up for market; there will also be a chance to sample some of these specialties along the way.
After exploring Khaung Daing and refuelling on fantastic local snacks we hop into our long-tail boat, along with the bikes, for our first trip on the water. This trip takes us through the maze of floating gardens unique to Inle Lake, growing a variety of seasonal vegetables and greens atop the water. Our boat will then continue on towards our secret destination at an isolated peninsula.
Arriving at our special location we'll take to the bikes again, following a little used rural route along dirt trails, beside water channels and rice paddies, getting far off the beaten track into remote communities that seldom see tourists. If we find mud it'll just add to the fun!
Our adventure through this beautiful countryside will bring us to a different section of the lake where our long-tail boat will again be waiting to take us out on the water. We arrive into a quieter area of the lake among a small stilt community where we can relax and enjoy a fantastic, truly 'home cooked', Shan lunch served in a traditional house.
After a short rest to let lunch settle and soak up the picturesque views across the lake we will then take to the kayaks for a laid back paddle taking us through villages, floating tomato gardens and across a stretch of open lake. Our long-tail will accompany us and give you complete freedom of choice about how far your adventure takes you.
Following our kayak we will return by boat transferring across the lake back to Nyaung Shwe. The cruise back is a good opportunity to catch some last minute photos of the lake and surrounding hills in the late-afternoon light. Arriving in town it is just a short ride to conclude our trip back at the shop.

This was our third trip with Grasshopper, and we’ve never been disappointed. The quality of the experience, condition of the equipment and the service of the friendly guides has always been top notch. On this particular trip Zay Yar and Aung guided us to local villages and through a bamboo forest. There were 2 connections by boat. The “snack” and lunch stops were delicious. And we ended the day with a kayak tour of Nam Pan. The trip was exactly as described - no surprises. The only additional comment I would make is that while the ride was flat and not particularly technical, your child should be comfortable riding a mountain and navigating a single track.Oh what an amazing day! If you want to discover the real life around Inle Lake beyond the tourist tracks, then sign up for this tour. Grasshoppers Adventures are amazing. Oh what an amazing day! If you want to discover the real life around Inle Lake beyond the tourist tracks, then sign up for this tour. Grasshoppers Adventures are amazing. The description of the tour as described by Grasshoppers is spot on, so I won't go through it again. We were looking for a full day of activities, with a chance to be taken down roads we would have never found ourselves, and this is exactly what we did. We had done something similar in Cambodia the year before so had a fair idea of what to expect, and we were not disappointed. The beauty of this tour is that it is designed for small groups. Chris and I (from London) were joined by Paul and Isabelle (from Sydney) and all 4 of us not only enjoyed the tour, but also shared tips on other things we had done during our respective holidays. Our guide was fab. He spoke very good English and told us so much about the real life of Burmese people. So interesting! The snacks in the morning were amazing. So many different dishes, all home made and served fresh. Lunch was just as delicious and in all honesty, the food we ate on that day was the best food we had during our entire 2 week stay in Myanmar. We got to see people at work, kids at school, farmers working the land, and all this in beautiful peaceful surroundings. Do not miss it, it is so so good. Bonus point for Grasshoppers: we didn't even have to arrange for a transfer back to our hotel at the end of the day. They simply dropped us off. 10 out 10 all the way!We spent a day biking, canoing and boating around Inle Lake with San. A superb way to meet the locals and see their way of life. Always smiling people. Great value for money. A wonderful day. Thanks to San. Niels and Ulla Denmark

I took the tour today and it is absolutely worth the money! The bikes are in very good shape, the group was veeery small (aka only me and Sam, the guide), the food is good and plenty and we spent more than nine hours on and around the lake. We went through villages, different landscapes, where invited for tea and escaped the loud motor boats on the lake for a bit. Sam knows people everywhere, he explains a lot and I think he can really adapt the tour to the biking skills of his guests. Still, I think it helps if you're a secure rider, feeling confident crossing some smaller bridges etc - but absolutely not necessary to have any specific mountainbiking skills. To me, this was a perfect day around the lake, a lot more impressive and memorable than the "classic" Inle motorboat tour (that I did the day before). If you like a bit of adventure and most of all getting away from other tourists then take this tour! My guide Sam was great, answering all of my questions, showing me the best photo spots, introducing me to locals and translating. The bike trip is really fun, but you should be comfortable riding...
If you like a bit of adventure and most of all getting away from other tourists then take this tour! My guide Sam was great, answering all of my questions, showing me the best photo spots, introducing me to locals and translating. The bike trip is really fun, but you should be comfortable riding a mountain bike and have same basic skills - trails and bridges are narrow, that’s what makes it even more fun! Food was great, the Kajak tour a chilled ending to the tour. Sam even arranged for the boat to have me dropped off at my hotel. Highly recommended!
