Stop At: Dharavi, Mumbai India
Asia's largest slum, Dharavi, lies on prime property right in the middle of India's financial capital, Mumbai (Bombay). It is home to more than a million people. Many are second-generation residents, whose parents moved in years ago. In a city where house rents are among the highest in the world, Dharavi provides a cheap and affordable option to those who move to Mumbai to earn their living. Daily wages here can be as low as 185 rupees ($4/£2.20) per day. As Dharavi is located between Mumbai's two main suburban rail lines, most people find it convenient for work.
Dharavi also has a large number of thriving small-scale industries that produce embroidered garments, export quality leather goods, pottery, plastic and many more. Most of these products are made in tiny manufacturing units spread across the slum and are sold in domestic as well as international markets. The annual turnover of business here is estimated to be more than $650m (£350m) a year.
The state government has plans to redevelop Dharavi and transform it into a modern township, complete with proper housing and shopping complexes, hospitals and schools.

Great tour and an excellent guide. We went through wonderful botanical gardens, and through the slums, to reach the gate of India. Can't wait for my next time in India, to go again.

We ended up staying 4 hours in dharavi , which was very enriching. Highly recommended

I highly recommend the slum tour. It was the highlight of my visit to Mumbai. This area is full of hardworking people and families doing the best they can with what they have. It was very safe (although not very visually appealing). Make sure you have Vishal or other guide take you to get some tea made by Mahindra (I think that's his name!). It was the best ginger tea I had during my entire stay in India. What an incredible experience to visit the slums & I’m so pleased I booked with this company. We had a fantastic experience with Young Tours and Travel as our tour guides in our short trip to Mumbai! As it was our first time visiting India we spent a lot of time on the first morning researching different tours... however this tour company stood out as not only were they quick in responding but also able to cater to what we wanted and offered lots of information! So we booked two tours... both the Private street food tour and the private Dharavi slum tour. The first evening we were picked up by our guide Rahul and his driver and drove directly to our first stop to try some Masala Chai... which was amazing! We learned so much from Rahul about Mumbai and all the different foods and it was wonderful trying all the different types of foods! We stopped at over 6 different places to sample a variety of street foods. As food lovers... we were in paradise! The following day we were collected and driven to the Dharavi slum where we spent a few hours with Rahul again learning about the various industries and residential areas. It was really informative and our tour ended with a visit to Rahul’s home where we were given some more Masala chai and met his family. Thank you very much to Young Tours and Travel for a fantastic two days, which we will always remember! When we return to Mumbai in the future, we will be sure to contact for another tour! And will recommend to all of our friends/family!My friend and I joined the slum tour (2hours). Tour guide Vishal was very nice and helpful. And also Rahul arranged our tour smoothly. His reply was very quick. The end of the tour, Vishal and Rahul invited us their house, and we had a teasty chai! Thank you :)
