Itinerary
Lunugamvehera National Park in Sri Lanka was declared in 1995, with the intention of protecting the catchment area of the Lunugamvehera reservoir and wildlife of the area. The national park is an important habitat for water birds and elephants.
The catchment area is vital to maintain the water levels of the five tanks in the downstream of Kirindi Oya and wetland characteristics of Bundala National Park. This national park also serves as a corridor for elephants to migrate between Yala National Park and Udawalawe National Park.

Our driver arrived early and so we were first into the park. We hated the idea of loads of vehicles chasing around after animals and in fact we only saw 3 other vehicles the whole time we were in it. He wasn't a wildlife expert, but the driver was knowledgeable and looked out for different things we might be interested in. We saw lots of eagles (including a mid air fight between a fish Eagle and a sea eagle). Also, lots of spotted deer, buffalo, monkeys, kingfishers, land and water monitor lizards, huge crocodiles and even two leopards. One was sitting in the middle of the road, and the other later joined it. Particularly impressive was that even after we saw the 🐆 🐆, our driver didn't try to cut the trip short, thinking that's all we wanted. We got the full 5 hours in the park. Lastly, the vehicle was great. The two of us had the large safari jeep to ourselves. It had a glass front that could be flipped up for viewing but closed to prevent dust in your face when driving home. I was a bit nervous when I booked as this trip as didn't have any reviews and everyone seems to be so eager to go to blocks 1 and 2, but we were both very happy that I did.
