Madeira s highest Peaks
Overview
Starting at Pico do Areeiro, within a short distance we come upon the Ninho da Manta (Buzzard’s Nest) belvedere. From this platform one can see the valley of Fajã da Nogueira, where some Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinnus) breed, São Roque do Faial and a large part of the Central Mountain Range.
To reach Pico Ruivo at 1862m, we must go around Pico das Torres up a steep incline of steps carved in the rock and then descend, the most difficult part of this trail being the final climb to the Shelter at Pico Ruivo. But the thought of reaching the highest point of the island is a driving force.
From the Pico Ruivo shelter, the footpath leads to Achada do Teixeira car park, where you can see “Homem em pé” (Standing Man), a basalt rock formation found on the way down the slope after you pass the shelter at Achada do Teixeira.

Excelente ! La guía maravillosa. El recorrido por los picos fue increíble. Una caminata algo fuerte pero sin duda que vale la pena.

A pretty walk up over a ridge and excellent guide explained about plants / farming etc. good safety briefing before more exposed paths on cliffs but all good. Excellent day but only reason 3 stars is because had dreadful booking - couldn’t add pick place and local agent agreed time and place on the phone but then sent email 10.50pm changing this day before! We booked to do the mountain hike but the weather was so bad we were unable to do it. We drove to the top of the mountain then abandoned it and were taken to a cliff walk along to Porta la Cruz. Lovely walk and excellent knowledgable guide so it turned into a good day despite the disappointment of not seeing the mountain tops.If you are visiting the beautiful island of Madeira and are fit enought to do so then the Pico Arierio to Pico Ruivo hike is a must do. If you are visiting the beautiful island of Madeira and are fit enought to do so then the Pico Arierio to Pico Ruivo hike is a must do. The question is then how is it best done. We contemplated a car hire but the best way to do the hike is to avoid the trip back to the start point and instead decent to teixiera. This hike tour allows for this and is also well organised with a knowledgeable and friendly tour guide (Claudio). You can travel at your own pace and meet other travelers. There is also a 'poncha' stop on the way home at another place of interest which is another added bonus. Definitely recommend..I went with Nature Meetings for hike to Pico Ruivo on 17.01.20. I went with Nature Meetings for hike to Pico Ruivo on 17.01.20. It was quite exhaustive, even that I do hike in the mountains, but I do not regret a single drop of my sweat and I'm even thinking to do it once again in other season of the year to see how the nature changes. Views! What views are there! And I could admire those views also because we were taken care by the really good guide, a guide that tells you where to pay special attention when going up or down, that knows what exactly is waiting there for you in the path and makes sure that everyone can go through safely, enjoying themselves and nature around. He was also very informative, friendly and easy to talk to person, very knowledgeable showing the plants, explaining some geological, fauna and flora facts. I do apologize that I don't remember his name, but really would like to thank him for this tour! Thank you Nature Meetings! Agnieszka
