Stop At: Lake Wanaka, Wanaka New Zealand
In Māori culture we hold two important aspects dear to us. the first being Manaakitanga (Hospitality) and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land) .At WanaHaka® we want you to connect with these 2 important cultural elements.
This Pōwhiri can be done in either Queenstown or Wanaka so please do email first as to your preferred location if required.
You will be greeted by a Wero/Challenge with a Māori Warrior and Taiaha, from here we move through the key elements of the pōwhiri/welcome where we may start as strangers but by the end we end up as whanaua/family.
A truely inspiring cultural experience that combines both the people and the land of Wanaka and Queenstown.

Today my son (4.5) and I experienced the most powerful and moving Whakataū or Maori Welcome. Joe delivered a moving, educational and interactive Wero (challenge), Hongi, and two haka - one specific to Wanaka and the other famously performed by the All Blacks. Each element was explained and broken down in a way where both our attention was captured, and we left with a new felt sense of understanding and connection to both the land and the tangata whenua (people of the land, Maori). As a Kiwi returning home after almost a decade away, this Whakataū bought tears to my eyes... and a new found sense of home & whanau. Thank you Joe... immensely!Joe is amazing! He is a very nice and friendly person. And also, he got rich knowledge and great enthusiasm for the Māori Culture. It was a wonderful morning with the Māori welcome. I would like to try the wine tour as well. Highly recommend for WanaHaka Tours if you come to Wanaka!!
