By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the Nazi-occupied part of Europe. Upon arrival at the Memorial grab your audio guide (available in 11 languages) for a self-guided tour through the preserved grounds. In your own time visit the prisoner’s barracks, roll call area, SS-quarters, camp prison, gas chamber, and the highly rated Mauthausen Museum with the "Room of Names".

The tour was so interesting and our guide, Fleming, was fantastic! What a tragic time in history that we must never forget.

Ii was an unforgettable experience and the guide was very well informed. We even reached Vienna earlier than supposed, and I could go and visit National Opera and the Library after the trip to Mauthausen! I shall recommend this to my friends.

Tom was an excellent guide. When he greeted us he was friendly and inviting. He spoke top notch English on the way there giving us background information about the camps. He communicated well asking us about our backgrounds and shared his interesting life story . He did his best to answer our questions and we knew much more about the camp and Vienna as a result.I met our guide at Tourist Info Wien (right off the U1 line at Karlsplatz stop). I met our guide at Tourist Info Wien (right off the U1 line at Karlsplatz stop). He explained a lot of helpful history to us on the ride over and then had us watch a short documentary of the concentration camp on iPads in the van which was very wise. We got to Mauthausen with a greater and more In-depth understanding of what took place there which made our visit more meaningful. When we arrived we were given audio guides and a map and allowed to wander the camp and it’s museum on our own for a few hours before reconvening. It was pretty desolate aside from a few school groups visiting. Our tour guide was great and even drove us down into the granite quarry so that we could see it up close. We went to lunch at a nice but casual sit down restaurant that served Austrian cuisine. Overall worth the money and I highly recommend this tour. The trip was good but over priced. The trip was well organised- we were pick up was timeous. Our driver was very knowledgeable about the history of the camp and the events surrounding it. The actual camp was unbelievable- they have tried to keep it as original as they could. It was a eye opener for us. Nothing prepares you for the reality. They even have the original gas chambers and incinerators. 😢
