Antoine organised an insightful, information rich but yet concise and fun introduction to the world of Mezcals! The tour at Puerto Escondido’s only distillery, a sixth generation enterprise included explanations of the various agaves, different fabrication practices, and most importantly the tasting. Antoine, Tomas and team make the experience enjoyable and insightful, and can explain as much as you’re interested in learning while keeping it fun. I already knew Antoine and was looking forward to participate to his Mezcal Tour during my stay in Puerto. His achievement and the quality of the visit was beyond our expectations, we learnt a lot during this visit in a fun way, and had an excellent degustation of a variety of Mezcal. Beyond a tour that need to be a ‘classic’ for every visitor in Puerto Escondido, Antoine and Tomas (who owns and run the distillery) are bringing together a fantastic partnership and make us share their passion in a fantastic way. This was a fun and pleasant way to spend a few hours, take in some local culture and custom, drink some authentic local firewater and maybe make some new friends. We signed up and paid for the tour online. The start time given was a little vague stating we would be picked up at our hotel between 3:30 and 4:00 pm. But almost immediately we received an email from our tour guide introducing himself and giving a specific pick up time on 3:10. The tour offered lots of options for locations to be picked up, including our hotel which was very convenient. Our bus and tour guide arrived on time. He was a very friendly guy, explained the tour in some detail as we drove to pick up the other members of our tour group. Perhaps it was because it was a tour of a distillery (what’s not to like), but our group of 13 was lively, friendly and fun and by the end of the tour we all seemed like old friends. I give our guide a lot of credit because he worked hard to make sure everyone was having a good time. After about a 20 minute bus ride we arrived at our distillery, where the family had been making. Mezcal for six generations. We were seated at a large table, and given hand held fans to fight the heat of the day and then given a detailed and really interesting presentation about the cultivation of the Agave plant and the process of making it into Mezcal. I am not a stranger to distilled spirits but I learned a great deal, and our guide and the employees answered all our questions quite knowledgeably. They then gave us a hands on tour and walked us through the processes they had just show us. What was most fascinating was that the distillers use both a modern copper still, but also clay pots as the original distillers did. Both made very good Mezcals but the differences in the two were notable, Next we moved on to the tasting and rating during which we were served 10 different Mezcals, each one explained in detail and between each taste, orange slices were provided to cleanse the palate. I was very surprised at the high quality of this small distillery’s product. The servings were generous and everyone had a great time picking and discussing their favorite. We then had the option to purchase. A wide range of options and sizes were available at VERY REASONABLE prices. No pressure to buy and certainly no price gouging. Then the driver and guide took some group fotos (which he promised to send to all of us) returned the (by this time) merry group to our various hotels, This tour was just about the perfect length time-wise, Our tour guide was super as was the driver. Everything ran on time and smoothly. This is a great way to spend a late afternoon during your stay not expensive and not taxing. I highly recommend this tour as a great Oaxacan experience!
