I would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to visit the Milford Sound. It was great being about to drive there and see everything from the ground, and then return via air and see everything from above. We had a beautiful sunny day, and our guide, Erik from Altitude Tours, was able to provide so many details about the areas that we passed through on the drive, as well as make the transition from bus to boat to plane seamless. I highly recommend this excursion, and if you are able to have Erik as the guide you will definitely have an enjoyable time! The weather didn’t cooperate, so we didn’t get to enjoy a flight back to Queenstown, but I reckon it was appropriate to experience Milford in its more usual form - rainy and shrouded in mist. The weather didn’t cooperate, so we didn’t get to enjoy a flight back to Queenstown, but I reckon it was appropriate to experience Milford in its more usual form - rainy and shrouded in mist. It lent a certain aura to the grand scenes everywhere we looked. We rode to and from the cruise in a Sprinter van with Rich, a cheerful gent who provided relevant commentary interspersed with song, whistling and dad jokes. They were very long drives, but there were frequent opportunities to get out and take photos, etc., and this was a fine chance to see the countryside’s farms and terrain. Tip: if you can find something that actually repels sandflies, use it at the dock area, but once the boat gets going, they are left behind. My partner and I had booked to take a coach to and from Milford sound through altitude tours, however when our bus broke down leaving us stranded at Milford sound the company organised (free of charge) for us to be flown back to Queenstown with Scenic Flights. My partner and I had booked to take a coach to and from Milford sound through altitude tours, however when our bus broke down leaving us stranded at Milford sound the company organised (free of charge) for us to be flown back to Queenstown with Scenic Flights. Our pilot Andy was fantastic, particularly as we had a couple of people from the bus that were nervous about being on a small plane. If you can afford to fly back from Milford sound I would absolutely recommend it, the views were spectacular.
