Miyajima (宮島) is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views.
While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine island". This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water.
Miyajima is a romantic place, best enjoyed by staying overnight at one of the island's ryokan. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths.

Our guide, Naomi, picked us up from our hotel and took us on a wonderful tour of Miyajima. We went by bus, train and ferry. On our way to visit the Itsukushima shrine we sampled some grilled oysters, hot maple leaf red bean cakes, and some plumb sake. We went up the Miyajima Walkway, and saw some stunning views. Naomi was an excellent guide. She was very friendly and considerate, and was full of information about the area, and Japan in general. She took us to a quaint coffee shop, and found a lovely restaurant for lunch. On our return we went to the Peace Memorial, where she took us to see a statue that we were interested in seeing, as it has a connection to our home city of Coventry. It was a very, very enjoyable day.Tom was an absolutely brilliant guide for us during our private tour in Hiroshima. Tom was an absolutely brilliant guide for us during our private tour in Hiroshima. We visited the A-bomb monuments, the Peace park, Atom Bomb Museum and Shukkeien Garden. We learned so much more than when we would have done this on our own. Tom was not just very knowledgeable, but also a true gentleman. Very educational day for our family.
